Bug Description

According to the installer at the "Choose a picture" step:

"This picture will identify you in the account settings, login screen, and lock screen."

However, the login screen does not currently allow for the user picture to be shown, nor is this planned ( bug 834733 was marked as Won't Fix and Invalid). As such, there is an inconsistency here.

"This picture will be associated with your user and displayed along with your username in places." would be neutral way of starting the same thing.

This way the sentence would work for any of the flavours, even these that don't use the picture in the screensaver or use it on the login screen.

I'm fine changing the string to the proposed one above, but I'll need release team, documentation team and translation team approval before doing this as it's an important string in the installer and is likely in some documentation.

summary: - The installer still says your picture will be used on the login screen
+ [UIFe] The installer still says your picture will be used on the login

On behalf of the Documentation Team this is something we could adjust documentation to match assuming the string is adjusted.

"in places" seems a little handwavy to me, but certainly better than making false promises :)

Approved by release team based on Benjamin's doc team approval.

Right, the "in places" is there so we can keep the exact same string whatever the user environment and not need to update it if we do any major rework of unity-greeter or similar pieces.

Now just waiting from a YES/NO from the translations team.

+1 from the translations team if it's to show accurate information.

"This picture will be associated with your user and displayed along with your username in some places." sounds much better than "in places", but it still doesn't sound quite right. Then again, I'm not a native English speaker. It might be worth quickly checking with a copywriter from the design team.

@pitti

If you will be doing the string change can you also provide a screenshot for doc team.

I'll be doing the string change once we agree on what the new one will be ;)
I'll attach a screenshot once the change has been done (and I find a system with a webcam to actually get that screen...)

From a copywriter's perspective, David's suggestion looks good. My own preference would be to simplify the sentence slightly and use 'at times' rather than 'in some places', i.e:
'This picture will be associated with your user name and displayed alongside it at times.'
It is subjective, of course. This suggestion is probably a bit friendlier because it's a little less precise - and I think it will make more sense to the novice user.

@stgraber can you confirm the changes and do we have a screen and perhaps can you refer me to which docs we will need to update and I can get this done today.

Benjamin, as far as I know we don't have documentation for the installer except for the (rather technical) installation guide.

https://help.ubuntu.com/11.10/installation-guide/amd64/

We've still got two weeks until Documentation Freeze if you (or others) want to add that to the installed-by-default help. You're welcome to ping me on #ubuntu-doc or at <email address hidden> if you want to discuss this more.

Here's the screenshot, however I don't have a webcam so I had to trick it into displaying the window without one :)
