Just got shell+logcat on the serial port to work -- here's some more details:
Looks like it isn't actually suspend mode, but the display entering power saving mode.
The board is still responsive, it's just the display that blanks and remains blank.
ioctl calls to FBIOPAN_DISPLAY fail at the point, hinting at a driver level problem.
