This is due to gnome-main-menu not handling an overly large .recently-used and .recently-used.xbl

I have a 1.8mb .recently-used.xbel file. main-menu takes about 1 to 2 minutes at 100% cpu to start up (it doesn't show up in the panel until it's done)

Removing the .recently-used.xbel file reduces startup time to a couple of seconds.

stracing it during startup with the xbel file found over 17,000 gettimeofday system calls!

according to the changelog, this was supposedly fixed in a changeset of 2007-03-16 by Jim Krehl <email address hidden>

" Simplified the TileTable object to make it more generic. Stop loading
tiles after the table limit has been reached, this is to prevent delays
associated with large ~/.recently-used{,.xbel} files. Made the
TileTable more responsive to user changes, instead of waiting for those
changes to be written to the file system.
"

doesn't work though (i tested with trunk code too).
