Bug Description

#181 is : Software Preferences
This string is displayed in Synaptic > Configuration > repositories. Have a look to the title of the window. The title is relevant.

But this string is also displayed in System > Administration > Software Preferences.

This is the same window, the same software.

In fact « Software Preferences » in System > Administration is very confusing because we don't know to which software it's related.

I suggest « Repositories manager», indeed this is my translation.

Note: the original reporter indicated the bug was in package 'update-manager'; however, that package was not published in Baltix.

Argh, damned ! Not in Baltix but in Ubuntu.
Sorry.

software-properties also allows to configure automatic updates and to manage the auth keys.

by the way the term "repository" is deprecated. Ubuntu uses "software channel" now. a patch that would change the string in synapitc missed the string freeze.

"software channel manager" sounds awkward.

since we are so close to release this is a dapper+1 issue.

i would appreciate further comments and input on this.

I haven't noticed update-manager manages auth key too, so I agree with you about your proposition : "software channel manager"

In french translations, we'll use the new name in Dapper since the freeze hasn't come yet.

i would strongly recommend to use the old name. the translation should not be used to fix design issues. furthermore it should be consistent with the original.

[update-manager.po]

In fact,
string #181 --> title of the window (should be modified)
string #215 --> menu item (what is really confusing, must be modified)

If you plan to modify the strings for Dapper+1, strings #214, #38, #152 are (at least - it only concerns update-manager package) to be modified too (they refer to "software properties" menu item)

Error : string #214 is already OK

If it can help you too, I've searched in language-pack-fr/-gnome/-base and ubuntu-docs and I found another string : [ubuntu-docs]/desktopguide.po, #809.

By the way could you please use the msgid of the strings and not the number in the po file. the order can change after a string change. Furthermore I simply do not have the time to search for the messages in the po file.

Thanks,

Sebastian

[update-manager]
- "Software Preferences"
   Located in: ../data/SoftwareProperties.glade.h:13
Should be changed, it matches with the title of the window

- "Software Properties"
   Located in: ../data/software-properties.desktop.in.h:2
Must be changed since this is very confusing (not explicite)
It matches with the menu items (System > Administration)

- "Some third party entries in your souces.list where disabled. You can re-enable them after the upgrade with the 'software-properties' tool or with synaptic."
   Located in: ../DistUpgrade/DistUpgradeControler.py:194
Reference to the software, must be changed too.

- "<b><big>You must check for updates manually</big></b>↵

Your system does not check for updates automatically. You can configure this behavior in "System" -> "Administration" -> "Software Properties".
   Located in: ../data/UpdateManager.glade.h:1
Reference to the shortcut, must be changed too.

[ubuntu-docs]/desktopguide
- "Open <menuchoice><guimenu>System</guimenu><guimenuitem>Administration</guimenuitem><guimenuitem>Software Properties</guimenuitem></menuchoice> ."
   Located in: C/add-applications.xml:192(para)
Reference to the shortcut, must be changed too.
   Moreover, it should be : "[...]</menuchoice>." not "[...]</menuchoice> ."

Hope this is what you need.

P.S. : there should also other strings in other packages such as xubuntu-docs for example but I haven't searched for.

Thanks for listing all this strings. I know that I would have missed one or two for sure otherwise.

This was set as affecting update-manager, but the bug talks about Synaptic. I've added the synaptic package, and am marking this as invalid for update-manger.

The Software preferences window has been renamed to Software Sources, the Repositories menu item should be updated accordingly to Software Sources, and it would fix this bug.
