Onboard "VIA K8M800" graphic card - machine hangs with any 3D app in full-screen mode

Bug Description

I've just installed Ubuntu 6.06 on a new PC based around the Gigabyte GA-k8VM800M motherboard. This has a built-in graphic card which the manual describes as "VIA K8M800".

Whenever I try to run a "3D" app in full-screen mode the entire machine hangs completely. (So it looks like maybe a MESA problem?) The way forward is to press the reset button.

Found this web page which seems to have a bearing on the problem.

It appears that I +may+ have a driver that +may+ help but I'm afraid I don't know how to tell what driver I'm currently using...

To my inexpert eye this looks remarkably like this bug:

To my way of thinking, the critical thing is not that 3D apps don't work - it's that the machine hangs. Can I stop that happening somehow?

Hey Andy,
the problem as I take it is that the VIA K8M800 is a relatively new chipset, and the current via-driver has not been updated to properly support it. I'm not 100% sure, but I wouldn't be surprised if this were due to the via-driver being proprietary and binary-only.

I agree with you, bug #43154 does look very related. So does bug #62093.

Since it appears so many users are experiencing this exact same problem, I'm going to mark this bug as a duplicate of bug #43154 to make life simpler for the bug squashers;) If you like, you can stay subscribed to that bug for any signs of progress. Hopefully a patch will be issued soon.

Cheers and Good Luck!!!
