Bug Description

Binary package hint: fglrx-driver

I did a update/upgrade today (2 june 2006) on my kubuntu dapper install. This install is not a fresh install... it has tracked dapper for the last 4isk months.

Some hours after doing the update/grade, I right clicked on the desktop to change my screen saver. The screen went mostly black, except for my mouse pointer. I could not interact with the system from the mouse / keyboard (ctrl-alt-f1 didn't work, also a quick tap on the power button didn't cause a shutdown). I was forced to hold the power button to cause a hard shutdown (I'm under the impression ssh-ing into it would have worked - call it gut feeling - but I had no ssh-able pc on the local net at the time).

After powering up the system, it booted normally through the kdm login. When the kde desktop should have started, a few things blinked in (kicker for example blinked in as a blueish rectangle for a 1/2 second), the died.

The screen was black with mouse pointer. The system wasn't hosed though... ALT-f2 worked, alt-space worked. ctrl-alt-f1..6+7 worked right, ctrl f1..9 worked correct too.

So this is what I did next:

alt-f1
login
export $DISPLAY=:0
kdesktop
ctrl-alt-f7
  >>yep, kdesktop works now
ctrl-alt-f1
kicker
  >>output:
[fglrx] API ERROR: could not register entrypoint for ...
(a line like this for about every api)

I am now upgrading to kde 3.5.3, I also edited xorg.conf to use ATI.

I will post back.
