Dapper doesn't boot on ProLiant ML350 with dual PIII 800

Bug Description

Dapper fails to boot on Compaq ProLiant ML350 with dual PIII 800. Booting it as a live CD it stops at:

[4294669.909000] ..MP-BIOS bug: 8254 timer not connected to IO-APIC

Booting with notsc it gets past that and after "Configuring some
drivers..." for some time it stops at a screen with nothing but a
blinking cursor.

Booting with noapic (without notsc) gets to the GUI then _very_ slowly loads Gnome. After 10-15 minutes it got as far as brown desktop with a blank top panel and nothing else, at which point I gave up waiting.

Let me know if you would like me to try anything with it.

I have this same behavior on an ML350. noapic allows it to boot the alternate install CD, but it is _very_ slow. I am going through the installation now. Incidentally, I noticed a BIOS setting where you can choose what operating system is installed. I naturally chose "Linux", but I am wondering if changing that setting might make a difference.

My idea for switching around the APIC settings in the BIOS didn't change anything, still not working correctly, and this is with the latest BIOS from HP. However, I discovered that if you install the "server" kernel image after doing the base install with "noapic" kernel option the machine will boot correctly without any special options.
