Absolutely! In fact, behind a router, it should be automatic. Try typing the following at the command line:

sudo ifdown eth0
sudo ifup eth0

and tell me what you see.

I don't think so... if you're looking for a file manager, you should have either nautilus (for regular Ubuntu) or konqueror (for Kubuntu). If you're looking for an editor, you should have gedit (Ubuntu), kate (Konqueror) and Vim (both).

secondly, after the first command I've got 'command not found'; after the
second command it was 'eth0 already configured'

Mr. Anderson, sorry for the mistake 'midnight commander EDITOR' ;what I had
in mind is the very easy graphic file manager and editor mc that the now
defunct LIBRA Linux distro had and which I was forced to abandon. I
personally, if you permit a suggestion, would very much like to see in
Ubuntu. If I'm not mistaken, searching somewhere the repositories for Ubuntu
mc appears to be available.

But first things first .... I must get this internet problem behind me.

searching the causes of the situation that I'm experiencing -no proper live autodetection/configuration of the mb integrated network interface with obviously no detection of the router and no connection to internet- would point to some problems with nvidia's drivers on the 606 ubuntu live distro. This is just an opinion based on a pure logical analysis of the situation; nvidia drivers for this particular chipset, in win environment and, it appears that in linux also for the network interface, are encapsulated into one file. there is no distinct ethernet driver.

question - will the new edgy? ubuntu release have built in live autodetection/configuration of the network interface for this mb specifically Foxconn 6150K8MA-8EKRS based on Geforce 6150 and nForce 430?

Any help is appreciated.

hello again world

today as a matter of curiosity I downloaded Kubuntu for amd64 -that's right with a "K"! and ... guess what world, ON THE SAME PC IT WORKED RIGHT OFF THE BAT!! booted up live with no glitches, the router was detected, internet connection configured the browser came up and surfed the net full bore WITH ipv6 enabled -the last just a small comment re the thread on the forum that ipv6 enabled caused all kinds of problems. I'll leave it up to the readers to draw their own conclusions re where the dead dog lies so to speak.

I'm still looking up to the upcoming Edgy distro to see if the problems that I've experienced got fixed. I'd like to have both implementations on my lan.
