Version 6.06 is not loading

Did you insert Ubuntu CD while in Windows? If so, it shows you some applications like Firefox or OpenOffice.org which can be installed on your Windows box. In order to launch the "real" Ubuntu, you have to put its CD in your CD-ROM drive, reboot, select CD as boot method in your BIOS and wait until Ubuntu LiveCD mode is up and running. On modern computers this isn't going to take much time. Once in LiveCD mode, you can try a full GNU/Linux distribution and, if you want to, install it on your hard disk.

I will try this method. However, I followed the directions from the cd and
it did not state the BIOS. I will give it a try.

Hello again,

This method did not function for me...maybe cause I am not that familiar
with the BIOS...Is there any other way or would you walk me though this
procedure?

David, Linux Ubuntu does not use bios at all; linux is entirely file based os. the only thing you must obseve as Luca said is that the PC should be set up to boot from cd. you shouldn't have any problems in getting linux running off cd.

Ok...I install the cd at boot-up but nothing happens..only the browser opens
up.

The BIOS is a bit of software on a chip on the motherboard of your computer. When you turn the PC on the BIOS is loaded and run. It contains some basic code for checking the system and reporting what hardware you have (amongst other things). You may see when you boot up some text appear telling you how much memory your computer has, what size hard disk and so on. This is the BIOS doing its stuff.

One of the settings in the BIOS is the "boot order" or "boot priority" or similar phrase. This is which device or sequence of devices should be accessed by the BIOS to find the operating system. It sounds like your machine id defaulting to loading from the internal hard disk. This is not the only option though. Most computers are able to boot up from the floppy drive, or from removable media such as the CDROM/DVD drive or even a flash device.

When you start the PC up there will be a special key or combination of keys that takes you to the BIOS setup screen. Often it's displayed on screen as "Press DEL to enter setup" or the key might be F1, F2 or F12. It depends on the hardware manufacturer, there is no standard here.

Once in the BIOS you need to find the setting for the boot order or priority and tell the machine to try the CDROM drive first, then the hard disk. If you have a bootable CD (like Ubuntu) in the drive it will boot off that, if not it will continue to boot off the hard disk.

Problem resolved

This is very helpful - except that the bios on my Sharp Actius MM20
doesn't offer an option to set the boot priority - only enable or disable the USB CD. I have it enabled. but it ignores it nevertheless. Any clues please?
