Xserver manages the display. You are most probably having some error due to driver or hardware misdetection or misconfiguration. I'd suggest trying the latest Dapper LIve CD and see if the same happens.

Hi

Downloaded Dapper and got the same error message.

Here are the details from the log.

X Window System version 7.0
Release Date 21 Dec 2005
X Protocol Version 11 Revision 0 Release 7.0
Build Operating System 2.6.12 PPC

(==) log file "/var/log/Xorg.0.log" Time Wed April 19 06:03:52 2006
(==) using config file "etc/XII/Xorg.conf"

Type of display monitor is Apple Studio Display ADC cathode ray tube.

Hope this helps.
I would really like to get this operating system working
Thank you for your help

Pete

I'll try the same Dapper live CD on a powerbook laptop tomorrow.

The log portion you cited is not enough to understand your problem, maybe you could look into the /var/log/Xorg.0.log for error messages and followup here with what you found...

You can type "less /var/log/Xorg.0.log" in a terminal window to look at the file or use a graphical text editor...

Typed "less /var/log/Xorg.0.log" at command line.
Received message unknown or corrupt file system.
No further ahead.

I'm late here, sorry, maybe you fixed it...

Ouch, what does the following command give:

df -h
mount

you can have a look at kernel messages by:
dmesg | less

and search for error messages explaining the /var fileystem corruption

Thanks for the reply
No! Couldn't get it to work so I gave up without fixing the problem.
I'll download the latest version and try again.
