Notes on compiling from source and additional information for translators

Written for gtk-gnutella by zapman on 2012-12-09

Hi,

This Launchpad project is used for translating gtk-gnutella, for additional information, supports requests etc, please see the home page at SourceForge.

For translators, the following hints are here to (hopefully) make your work easier:

You may well need to build and run gtk-gnutella to see whether the strings look OK. Fortunately, this is very easy as explained in README.Debian. To summarize, the following steps will suffice:

sudo apt-get install fakeroot debhelper gcc make zlib1g-dev libgnutls-dev
sudo apt-get install gettext libglib2.0-dev libgtk2.0-dev libdbus-1-dev
wget http://sf.net/projects/gtk-gnutella/files/gtk-gnutella/0.98.4/gtk-gnutella-0.98.4.tar.bz2/download
tar xvjf gtk-gnutella-0.98.4.tar.bz2
cd gtk-gnutella-0.98.4
./build.sh
sudo make install

When the installation is complete, you may launch gtkg as usual or using "gtk-gnutella" (without the quotes) from a terminal. Make sure you go to the File > Preferences > User Interface and enable the "Show additional information and settings for advanced and expert users" option to see the GUI with all the options. Note that almost all elements have a tooltip. To test your translation, simply go to the po directory in gtk-gnutella at your ~, copy the gettext catalog there and do again the ./build.sh and sudo make install steps.

Also, as you may have noticed, the help menu includes a FAQ section in HTML which cannot be translated on Launchpad, although translations for it are also more than welcome. An easy method for translating it is to use an HTML editor like SeaMonkey's composer or BlueGriffon which happily use spellchecker extensions. You may also want to use a grammar checker like LanguageTool before submitting your work. The FAQ files are in gtk-gnutella-0.98.4/extra_files/. For instance, the FAQ in English is at gtk-gnutella-0.98.4/extra_files/en/FAQ -- the FAQs in Greek and Japanese really need to be updated.

Finally, feel free to add a translation to the .desktop file below and submit it to the SourceForge tracker (which accepts Launchpad as an OpenID provider). The desktop file is at /extra_files/gtk-gnutella.desktop and the sentence that needs to be translated is "A GUI based Gnutella Servent" (or client if you prefer).

Should you have any questions or suggestions, please feel free to drop me a message at zapman (at) numericable period fr. This is the first time I'm managing a Launchpad project, so I may well screw up at times, I ask for your patience ;)
