NitroShare 0.3.0 Released

Written for NitroShare by Nathan Osman on 2015-03-21

This release was a long time in the making, but at long last, it has arrived. NitroShare 0.3.0 is finally available for download.

By far, the biggest change in this release is the removal of all file size limitations during transfer. You can transfer files of any size regardless of how much memory either device has. And it's fast too - NitroShare consistently matched or outperformed SMB in our tests.

This is certainly not the only change, however. We've simplified the discovery process - you no longer need to do anything after installing NitroShare to get it to work. Just start the program on each device and you're good to go - everything should happen automatically. NitroShare will even add an exception to the Windows Firewall or UFW if necessary.

There were an untold number of changes under the hood - we switched from Qt 4.x to Qt 5.x. We also took advantage of a number of C++11 features. Nearly everything was rewritten in order to better organize the code and improve performace.

Two people deserve special mention with this release. Daniel San helped create the About and Settings dialog, both of which look really awesome. Mateo Salta helped out with the OS X build and created the new logo, which also looks really awesome.

The next release is still in the planning stages, but I am definitely hoping to reimplement the "share boxes" that were removed from this release due to time constraints. An RPC interface is also planned.

As always, please download the program and let us know if you run into any bugs. Now that we've moved to GitHub, bugs should be filed here: https://github.com/nitroshare/nitroshare-desktop/issues

NitroShare has moved to GitHub

NitroShare development has now moved to GitHub. You can view the project at the URL below:

Launchpad will continue to be utilized for daily builds and translations. New bug reports should be filed on the appropriate GitHub page - you will no longer be able to file them here on Launchpad.

As for the project itself, I have begun rewriting the application from scratch in order to take advantage of C++11 and Qt5. The portions of the application that are nearly complete include network discovery and file transfer. There are still a lot of rough edges to be ironed out, but one of the most serious bugs plaguing NitroShare since launch has been fixed. It is now possible to transfer files of any arbitrary size across the network (subject to filesystem limitations, of course). Transfers also take place within a separate thread, allowing the transfer protocol to be implemented with blocking function calls.

I hope to publish an alpha-quality release for testing in the next few weeks. This will likely be after February 1, since we are waiting for CMake 3.2 to be released. I will attempt to make the release available on as many platforms as possible - at a minimum, DEBs for Ubuntu and an EXE installer for Windows.

Stay tuned for updates!

NitroShare Is Not Dead

Written for NitroShare by Nathan Osman on 2012-10-10

Although there haven't been any commits to the NitroShare codebase in the last few weeks, I just wanted to assure everyone that the application is NOT dead nor am I abandoning it. In fact, I am busy working on some of the core features that will make their way into the next version. However, due to the scope of those features, I found it necessary to work on the components in a series of steps. To test many of the steps, I have created smaller applications that take advantage of them - this for example: https://launchpad.net/simplekeyman

In other news, today I am pleased to announce that we have a NitroShare build for PPC thanks to the hard work of Mateo Salta. You can find it with the other downloads here: https://launchpad.net/nitroshare/+download

The First Stable Release of NitroShare Is Now Available

Written for NitroShare by Nathan Osman on 2012-07-09

Version 0.2 of NitroShare, the first stable release, is now available for download. We have gone all out when it comes to providing packages and installers this time around - in addition to our Windows installer and source archive, we have also included RPM and DEB packages for 32 and 64-bit systems.

This release is very similar to the previous development version (0.1.5). Most of the changes that have been made since then are tweaks to performance or reorganization of the source code.

As always, feedback is appreciated.

What's New in 0.1.5

Version 0.1.5 of NitroShare is now available for download and contains a number of new changes and features. The underlying protocol used for broadcast discovery and file transfer has changed quite a bit, increasing the reliability of transfers and allowing progress of the transfer to be displayed.

With this release, you can also create more than one ShareBox, providing a direct link to any other machine on your network. These ShareBoxes can be moved and positioned anywhere on your desktop.

This release also features a wizard that will guide you through the configuration process when you first start the application. The wizard makes it easier to find other machines on the network and takes care of setting everything up for you.

Lastly, this release features support for localized translations of the application. If your language is not available, we encourage you to help the project out by going to https://translations.launchpad.net/nitroshare and helping to translate the application into your language.
