The SignWriter project, comprises three integrated software tools for the study of Ancient Egyptian Languages.

Description
This project explores the requirements for a new set of Egyptology software programs for the transcribing, searching and analysis of Ancient Egyptian Texts. Since the first attempts to create an electronic storage system by the "Table Ronde Informatique et Egyptologie" in 1984, there have been many computer applications available for typesetting Egyptian hieroglyphics. Many of these use the “Manuel de Codage” format from “Manual for the Encoding of Hieroglyphic Texts for Computer-input” (Jan Buurman, Nicolas Grimal, Jochen Hallof, Michael Hainsworth and Dirk van der Plas, Paris 1988). This project builds upon their work and hopefully progresses it in a useful direction.

Programs for transcribing texts have focused mainly on storing more and more accurate representations of Egyptian texts and correcting typesetting issues. This project is concerned with the storage of the text from a philological point of view. The creation of a database system that can be searched for words, phrases, and grammatical forms and constructs. The intention is to develop an integrated set of research tools, a storage system, textual editing tools and a library of Ancient Egyptian texts with little regard for storing positional data for each sign.
