The Synfig Stage project allows a synfig scene to be created by combining synfig character files into a single synfig file. Currently this project launches a simple CGI server. Currently looking to allow the script to be runnable directly from the GUI

The Synfig stage project was developed to get around a missing feature of synfig studio - the ability to reference external canvas files. Dave was working on an animation and wanted to create a set of characters - this would allow other animators to create other adventures for the same characters, and would allow character re-use.

Unfortunately he couldn't find a method to reference external rig files from synfig - so we built this.

At a basic level, this tool builds a blank synfig scene and injects characters into this scene. This allows animators to build scenes with characters and animate them.

Currnetly Synfig Stage has been written using the Ubuntu Linux system, and should be installable via the project's PPA - however I am working on packaging this project for Windows also.

What is it built with?

Well - the main tool is Python. I wrote the code using Ninja-IDE, which is a cool editor for python files. It uses a CGI server to serve out a page, and to provide much of the main grunt work. Jinja is used to inject the characters into the empty scene, and I use LXML and possible some other libraries.

To install under Ubuntu :
* Add the ppa:computa-mike/synfigstage to your system's Software Sources.
    sudo add-apt-repository ppa:computa-mike/synfigstage
    sudo apt-get update

NOTE : PACKAGING RECIPE CURRENTLY BROKEN, THE PROJECT WON'T INSTALL USING THIS METHOD AT THE MOMENT.

* Install synfig-stage from the command line
    sudo apt-get install synfigstage
   or
    use Software Centre to install.
