Tomdroid 0.7.4 "Christmas surprise" released!

Written for Tomdroid by Stefan Hammer on 2013-12-24

After a long testing period we finally decided to release all the great work of the last year to the wild. This new release will be known as 0.7.4 and includes all changes from our current beta branch. It will be released not only on Launchpad, but also the Google Play Store and the Amazon Appstore.

Compared to our previous stable release (0.6.1), you will not recognize Tomdroid any more as we added note editing, two-way sync, tablet support, rich editing and much more! At this point we want to thank Noah, the man behind all that good work! He started this branch and included most of the awesome new features:

Tomdroid 0.7.4 - "Christmas surprise" - Stable Editing and Two-Way Sync!

Editing Features:
 * Rich text editor for editing and formatting notes
 * Ability to create new notes
 * Ability to delete local notes
 * Automatic renaming of notes on duplicate title (as Note 1, Note 2, etc.)
 * Note saved automatically on pause
 * Ability to revert all changes

Sync Features:
 * Two-way sync by default, one-way "pull" sync via "Revert All" button
 * Note conflict resolution screen when notes are of different date and both older or newer than last sync date
 * Automatic authentication - if you use Online Synchronisation, pressing "Sync" on first launch is enough to authenticate and sync
 * switching sync services/servers doesn't clear notes database anymore

UI Tweaks:
 * Tomdroid toolbar is now a native ActionBar
 * added tablet landscape view

Preference Tweaks
 * Added preference for changing base font size
 * Added preference button for backing up notes to SD card (when using online sync)
 * Added preference button for removing all notes from remote service
 * added option to hide/show note templates
 * added option to clear local notes database (useful if switching sync services)

... and much more! For details see our detailed changelog and the release notes of previous beta releases.

Although all the basics are working quite well at the current state, it might happen that you lose note formatting or content when editing notes or upon syncing. So keep in mind to frequently backup your precious notes!
For the near future we plan to improve our rich-text-editor and to streamline the synchronisation algorithms. The latter should make adding other synchronisation services (ssh, webdav, various cloud storage solutions) easy. Further, it would be cool to use the new Android ui elements called fragments to support swiping and all the cool stuff. However, this would mean that Android 1.6 - 2.2 can not easily be supported any more, so this is still open for discussion!

A short reminder: Tomdroid is a Tomboy compatible wikiwiki note-taking application for Android.

Merry Christmas!

Tomdroid 0.7.3 "Almost there!" released!

Written for Tomdroid by Stefan Hammer on 2013-10-24

I have the pleasure to announce the next and hopefully last release of our beta series. It was hard getting all release-critical bugs fixed as new ones did not stop to appear. This version will be called 0.7.3 "Almost there!" and fixes more than 35 bugs, including 10 critical/high ones and many enhancements. The biggest change probably was the rewrite of the XML parser to not loose any bullet-list notes again. This was done during the GNOMEdotNet Hackfest 2013 in Vienna (https://wiki.gnome.org/Hackfests/dotNET2013), for which I want to thank David Nielsen for organising it, Timo Dörr for his great support and explanations, and of course our awesome sponsors! Timo Dörr is also the guy who wrote our new sync server "Rainy" (http://www.notesync.org) which includes server-side encryption, a web-interface and all kinds of database options since the Google Summer of Code 2013.

This version is not a *stable* play store release yet as we would like to get one more round of testing done in our community. However, you can always subscribe to our beta releases published at Google Play following these steps:
1) Become a member of the Tomboy g+ community: https://plus.google.com/communities/113522025213005076554
2) Activate beta testing with this link: https://play.google.com/apps/testing/org.tomdroid
3) You should be able to install the latest beta using Google Play!

Alternatively, you can still download the apk from our project page: https://launchpad.net/tomdroid/+download. Point your Android browser over there and click on the top .apk file. More installation instructions are available in the README file.

Tomdroid 0.6.1 "Polyglot" released!

Written for Tomdroid by Stefan Hammer on 2013-03-18

Hi everyone,

I have the pleasure to announce Tomdroid's 0.6.1 "Polyglot" release!

This is a bugfix release for our previous stable version 0.6.0 and will be the last version pushed to the Android Play-Store containing only a one-way sync!
After this release we will be merging our beta branch containing great features like note editing, two-way sync or tablet support. This here contains mostly fixes and again more and updated translations. Thanks for your awesome help to make Tomdroid readable for almost everyone on the planet!
One of the most important fixes in this release is the support of a secure connection to Rainy, the new Tomboy-sync server written in C# and based on the tomboy-library. The developer, Timo Dörr, describes it as "more lightweight and designed for smaller, private groups like friends and families". In fact, it should be possible for everyone who knows a little bit about computers to host their own local Rainy server! The web-page contains more details on how to achieve this: http://www.notesync.org
Unfortunately, Ubuntu One is not hosting a note-sync server any more, as you have probably realised already: http://voices.canonical.com/ubuntuone/2013/02/04/notification-about-notes/ However, we are not able to provide a public available alternative to Ubuntu One yet. Tomboy Online is still in a closed Alpha and is not maintained any more and Rainy is missing some key features to use it as a public sync server. If you want to change this, hire Timo Dörr for two or three months during this summer and you will get a fully working, awesome alternative ;-)

Tomdroid 0.7.2 beta "For the Love of Monkey" released!

Written for Tomdroid by Olivier Bilodeau on 2012-10-17

Another sweet beta release crafted with the love of the tomdroid maintainers (I, shamefully, mostly do the release notes...). This is what we will call 0.7.2 "For the Love of Monkey". A ton of fixes and improvements since our last release.

It is *not* intended to be an android market release yet as we would like to get feedback and testing done in our local community first.
