Bug Description

Hotsyncing of USB based Palm Pilots (mainly Visor and Sony) fails in many instances due to instable connection init.

Several Palm PDA devices which use an USB connection for syncing with Linux applications require to initiate a hotsync before the computer will recognize them. This requires very delicate timing with the timeout for this being extremely short. Consequently, the PDA can most often not be properly accessed, resulting in failed synchronizations. Current user group discussions suggest that it might primarily concern PDAs depending on the Visor USB kernel module. Personally, i have so far only managed a complete sync using pilot-link (with a Sony Clie T625C). All Gnome based applications failed.

I have not had any problems with my Clie SL-10 and KPilot, in Dapper or Breezy Kubuntu.

I'd also like to suggest using J-Pilot, since you can tell it when to start listening for a sync, such as after you've told your PDA to sync. It also has facilities for installing files on your PDA, and it works finewith my Z22 handheld, once issues with /dev nodes are figured out. I think half of the confusion people have comes from the lack of default udev rules to symlink /dev/pilot to newly connected PDAs.

I haven't got the same problem, but my pda palm sony clie tj 35 won't even be recognised... (see link)
