I can confirm this issue.

The problem seems to persist in edgy. Since adept is a very central tool for Kubuntu I hope we get this issue fixed soon.

Yes, I agree with Jannick Kuhr's post. As a Czech l10n team member I hope it will be resolved as soon as possible. It is a bug that most Czech Kubuntu users note.

This bug also affect Edgy french users.
I really don't understand why there's something calling "ept" or "libept" in Launchpad as there's no packages named "ept".
Furthermore, there's now a template for "libadept" in Rosetta which contains exactly same strings that "libept".

Carlos Perelló Marín (carlos) wrote :

Hi,

I cannot help in adept not using translations, but I can help in fixing anything in Rosetta that is wrong.

From the adept source code, I can see this list of templates:

adept.pot
adept_installer.pot
adept_notifier.pot
adept_updater.pot
libept.pot

adept_batch.pot
libadept.pot

In Dapper and Edgy, last two templates aren't imported (well, libadept is, but we disabled it so it doesn't appear in the list of available resources to translate). That usually means that we didn't find it in the source package after the compilation. That should be reviewed by an Ubuntu/Kubuntu developer.

About libadept vs. libept, in Rosetta, we can rename libept to libadept if the name changed, but, If you know well, the layout used by adept and how it should be, help us to improve what we have imported in Rosetta, or just confirm that what we have right now is correct.

Thanks.

Thanks for your answer Carlos,

I've just downloaded adept source package 2.1.1-ubuntu3 (with apt-get source) and I didn't find those .pot files, the po folder is empty in this source package.

About ept and adept, I've noticed that ept was the Debian source package name, since release 2.1 the Debian source package is renamed to adept, so what is called "ept" should be removed for Edgy.

Carlos Perelló Marín (carlos) wrote :

Right, the .pot files are generated on build time. I checked the Makefiles that generate those files.

I used something like:

grep -r GETTEXT . |grep pot|less

About ept. That's the source package name in Dapper, and we still support Dapper, so it makes sense that we have still a reference to ept here (this bug tracker is not using a concrete distrorelease, but global packages across different releases like Dapper and Edgy).

As you can see here:

https://translations.launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/edgy/+source/ept/+translations

We don't have translations in Edgy for ept, but we do in Dapper:

https://translations.launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/dapper/+source/ept/+translations

Cheers.

Using this howto ( http://developer.kde.org/documentation/library/kdeqt/kde3arch/kde-i18n-howto.html ) it should be fairly easy to make adept load additional catalogs. I'll work on it and produce a patch soon.

The fix has been committed in SVN repository and uploaded into Feisty. Note that for some strings, you have to translate the libapt-front source package.

So if these changes will be in effect once localization efforts start for feisty, can we close this bug?

For now, Adept's layout is still in English in Feisty (menus are translated) though everything has been translated in Rosetta.
I'll wait for language-pack packages for Feisty (may be this week ?) to post another comment.

I'm using Feisty with adept-2.1.2ubuntu18 and the latest French language-pack. The problem is still the same.
All the strings from libadept.pot template doesn't seem to be used by Adept.

I can confirm that this issue is still the same. In addition the whole "Software Sources" dialog is not translateable at all...

Sebastian Heinlein (glatzor) wrote :

Hi Jannick,

Software Sources is not part of adept. Take a look at the software-properties package. The GTK and the KDE frontend share the same backend and source tree.

Cheers,

Sebastian

Hi Sebastian,

you are right. But at the moment software-properties is not translatable either. So it doesn't make such a difference...

I really hope this nasty bug around Adept will be fixed before the release of Feisty. Adept is a very central tool for Kubuntu and the current situation makes a quite unprofessional impression to new users. And in addition Adept will be very difficult to use for non-english speakers. It's more than just folklore ;-)

Kind regards, Jannick

As I said previously, libadept.po seems not to be used by adept_manger and adept_installer.

In the source package, there's a patch named "kubuntu_03_translation_catalogues.diff". In this file there's some lines like :
 KLocale::setMainCatalogue("adept");
If I change those lines with :
 KLocale::setMainCatalogue("libadept");

and then rebuild the package, adept_manager and adept_installer are translated (but now the toolbar is in english because adept.mo is needed too....)

Hope this helps

Bruno: yes, that is indeed the problem. The fix is relatively trivial and Jonathan Riddell promised to take a look at this. The only thing left to do is wait, I guess.

Unfortunately still many strings appear untranslated although they are translated in Rosetta and included in the Langpacks.

Changed in adept:
status: Fix Released → Confirmed

Jannick: are you sure ? The right template to translate is libept.po not libadept.po wich seems to be unused, and of course adept** templates.
Adept is fully translated in French) on my Feisty and my Gusy systems.

Yes, I am sure ;-) For example if I right click an application in the main window, I get an context dialog ("Request install" etc.) but only the last entry is translated ("Show details").

You're right.I didn't notice that. The button "Forget changes and
quit" is also untranslated.
I didn't find the involved strings ("request purging", for instance)
either in .po files or adept/libept source packages.

Is this still an issue in Intrepid?

This bug seems to be fixed in Hardy (adept 2.1.3). If some items are still in English in context menu (e.g. Request reinstall) it's probably because there's some untranslated strings in libapt-front.

This bug report was about adept 2.*, Intrepid will use adept 3.0.

Jonathan Thomas (echidnaman) wrote :

Cool. This sort of problem shouldn't be in Adept 3 either. If there are English strings in Adept3 it's probably because it's not totally translated yet.
