plug:spdif on emu10k1 gone after breezy upgrade

Bug Description

In Hoary, I was directing some output through plug:spdif. Once my breezy
upgrade was complete, I can no longer do this.

$ aplay -D plug:spdif /usr/share/sounds/KDE_Notify.wav
aplay: main:533: audio open error: No such device

I've filed the bug under alsa-base, but I'm guessing this could possibly be
kernel related.

Please provide outputs of

    cat /proc/asound/cards
    cat ~/.asoundrc

~/.asoundrc is an empty (contains one byte, 0x0a) file.

Please execute the following:

$ sudo invoke-rc.d alsa force-unload && sudo rm -f /var/lib/alsa/asound.state &&
sudo modprobe snd-emu10k1

Then use your favorite mixer to unmute and increase the necessary mixer elements.

Hmm. Do you have an hypothesis about how an obsolete asound.state file
could result in "aplay: main:533: audio open error: No such device"?

I just read the referenced bug, and this does not describe my problem. Normal
PCM audio is working just fine. The problem I am having is that I cannot
address the IEC958 (aka SPDIF) port. This makes things like playing DVDs in
Passthrough mode now impossible.
