Bug Description

When gksudo runs, it fades the background screen. I understand that the purpose of this is to inform the user that all other windows are blocked. However, for a number of users the "fade effect" it is a minor to significant annoyance.

There is no way presently to disable the gksudo fade. The fade is buggy on some video cards and distracting in general for some of us. Please put in an option in gconf-editor to disable the fade (i.e., return gksudo to the Breezy behavior).

Clemens (clast) wrote :

i agree, either the fade effect should be fixed to work smoothly or the user should get the chance to disable it.

it's one of the few things that currently make dapper look unpolished.

I would also like to see a way to disable the fade.

Roybotnik (roybotnik) wrote :

Yes, please make an option. This effect looks terrible on my 9600 pro and i'd rather just not have it since it adds lag for no real reason.

Clemens (clast) wrote :

i think it affects gnome-sudo, doesn't it?

Dennis Kaarsemaker (dennis) wrote :

no, gnome-sudo is obsolete

Sebastian Heinlein (glatzor) wrote :

a workaround would be to disable the keyboard and mouse grab in gconf-editor. this also disables the fade effect.

yes, I totally agree, the fade effect is totally annoying. I'm currently using Xgl and sometimes it takes about half a minute in performing the effect (which, by the way, Xgl accomplished to do in just seconds!).

please enable the option to disable it.

Fredrik Sjögren (fsj) wrote :

Please do!

The fade is VERY ugly on my Matrox G450.

updating milestone since we are after dapper now

Same here, the fade effect isn't very nice, it looks like a piece of "dirty" programmed software, for programer, who woult like to test some of the features of thier programs, but not for the end user. it totally don't fit into the other -mostly nice- look of the Ubuntu interface (X/Gnome)

Manu Cornet (lmanul) wrote :

Closing the bug: as mentionned earlier, setting the /apps/gksu/disable-grab GConf key to true provides an easy way of disabling the fade. I don't think this setting should make it further into the UI, and we should rather concentrate on making it work on all pieces of hardware (please file separate bugs where appropriate). If you have comments about the fade itself not being as good looking as you would expect, there are other bug reports about this :)

I DO NOT want to disable the grabbing of the input with /apps/gksu/disable-grab, this is a security issue. I just want to disable the REALLY UGLY and slow fading animation ...

Fredrik Sjögren (fsj) wrote :

My fix is:

Download the gksu source code and all packages needed to build it.

Edit gksu.c and change:

#define FADE_DURATION 500.0

To:

#define FADE_DURATION 0.0

Compile and install.

Tada! It is secure but fast. Why not just add an option for this?

Fredrik Sjögren (fsj) wrote :

The fade totally f*ck things up with Beryl.

This MUST be fixed.

Sebastian Heinlein (glatzor) wrote :

What has to be fixed is your language, Fredrik.

I just confirm the quite ugly fade effect, specifically when beryl is running.

Hope someone find a way to fix it, or give the option to disable it. ( a friendly solution for non-hackers ^_^)

OS: Ubuntu Desktop Feisty

Can you developers add a key to /apps/gksu something like, fade-duration so that we can configure this setting using gconf-editor? Pretty please? :) This would seem to be a very simple fix. Disabling force-grab results in an ugly window using Compiz, although does seem to do the trick for now.

I have a machine I only connect to with FreeNX, the fade takes ages to stream to my client. I'd love to see an option to disable the fade, or simple remove the fade, and keep the background dimming. Just something that isn't so demanding to stream.

I am a new User to Ubuntu and can confirm the darkening of the background is ugly and distracting. An option to disable this would be greatly welcome and make me use Linux more.
