Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-applets

When I first log in to GNOME, the weather applet shows "? --"

Then I connect to my network using "sudo dhclient eth0" from the command line.

I expect: the weather applet to update itself after a brief delay.

I get: "? --". I have to manually force the applet to update itself.

I'm running Dapper, Weather Report 2.14.2.

This bug is still present in Feisty.

As of a week ago or so the weather applet seems to detect when i go online and it updates itself within 30 seconds or so. Even though i have not changed the configuration on the applet and it only checks every 30 minutes. Is this just a coincidence or did it get fixed can someone confirm this in feisty?

This also works fine for me now! So I'm marking as fixed, but unmark it if you still have this issue.

i did some testing after that i disabled networking in network manager
pressed the update button on the weather applet and hovered my mouse over
it. It said updating ... then i enabled wireless connected and kept
hovering my mouse over it to see whne it would stop saying "updating..."
it took a very long time to go away. This makes me suspicious.

What happened earlier must have been a coincidence because it is not working anymore and when i did more testing it was not very reproduceable.

I can still confirm this behaviour in Hardy. For anyone who connects via wireless, they almost certainly won't get a weather report for 20-30 min, as the new weather info integrated into the Time applet doesn't appear to allow a manual update.

I confirm this as well, in hardy. Perhaps that online check doesn't wait long enough for a wireless connection to be established.

Same problem here on Hardy. It's a little but annoying issue that needs to be fixed.

I just installed Intrepid from scratch and it still has that problem. It originally updates before my wireless is connected. Either it's not really fixed yet, or maybe it has and we'll see it in Jaunty.

The problem is still here, annoying as ever! I'm using Karmic, two installations, they behave the same. I'm referring to the weather information in the system clock (Clock 2.28.0), not sure it's the one discussed here, but it's the exact same issue, with the difference that if it doesn't update by itself when I wake up the laptop, it will never do so until reboot.

Elie M. (elie-md) wrote :

doesnt update itself in lucid. after boot into the desktop its never there. and never shows unless I do killall gnome-panel, that would reboot the panel and get it there updated.

I know why it does that, it's because of the wireless connection not taking IP from DHCP fast enough at boot b4 the gnome panel appears thus the connection is never there to get the weather in my place. So the fix must be something that keeps trying to establish a connection with the server and try to update the applet when no connection exception happens, till it's successfully updated.

that's my 2 cents, please look into this and fix asap thx.
