Bug Description

Binary package hint: human-cursors-theme

Hi

jimmac has release a new icon theme which is very similar, but a bit more modern:

http://jimmac.musichall.cz/themes.php?skin=7

I would like to suggest updating the icon theme in ubuntu to this new theme which looks great (and
include both the black and white variants)

thanks

Thanks for your report! I agree with you that new cursor themes would be wonderful.

Really? What's wrong with the current one? His new icons have too dark of strokes. The more subtle grey and rounded edges are sharper.

Can we _please_ attempt to avoid completely subjective speculation forwarded as hard fact when discussing art and design? "too dark" and "are sharper" are rather useless.

Jimmac designed the cursors, and as such, he has released an updated version.

Insisting on keeping the _old_ set is rather like insisting on keeping Firefox 1.02 over 2.0.

Let's just roll with it and _try_, albeit in extremely microscopic ways, to keep Ubuntu design from stagnation.

Ken, care to weigh in?

I for one, find the new version to be an improvement.

I also agree with Troy that when discussing artwork one should address the issues and not use one subjective opinion to argue with, it only takes more time and leads to long thready of such opinions, amounting to nearly no good input (other than that everyone wants to give their opinion)

I agree, sounds good to me.

this is the artwork mailing list right ?
Well I was looking across some source for e17,
the enlightenment window manager , and I had an idea.
what if we took the code for animated backgrounds and put it in a gtk app for ubuntu ? it would really be cool. I am only talking about the specific code
and special file format used for animated backgrounds.

Actually this is an email interface to bug reports filed against the various components of Ubuntu. When you reply via email, the get appended to the actual bug report which is located at https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/human-cursors-theme/+bug/83886

While I would personally think that GNOME should have more frills regarding transitions and other possible design elements, this has the following issues:

1) It is an upstream issue. Given GNOMEs history, I believe that animated backgrounds would not go over well. You could certainly try to make your case upstream.
2) e17 utilizes a fully binary file format which goes against the ethics inherent in GNOME. GNOME seeks to make all things readable to the user and maintain source formats. There might be exceptions, but I know that was the case previously.

I hope this adds a little insight into the situation.

I just wanted to add my two cents about the animated background... To me, GNOME has been about offering a simple and easy to use yet powerful DE. The thought of adding animation to the background terrifies me.

As far as a different icon set. I don't see any issue with whatever is decided as long as it maintains simplicity and elegance.

I know this is an old bug and the decision was made. I just wanted to at least state my stance on changing parts of GNOME.

Also, does this bug still need to be open?
