Bug Description

Binary package hint: kubuntu-default-settings

hpijs-ppds package does not automatically install in Kubuntu feisty herd 3 install. Adept shows it as a standard kubuntu package, but as uninstalled.

I can confirm this. Without this package hp printer like Photosmart are recognized as Laserjet in the HPLIP Toolbox. After installing it installatioin of the printer is much more easier than under Windows.

unggnu (unggnu) wrote :

It isn't installed in Ubuntu Feisty too.

Mackenzie Morgan (maco.m) wrote :

Confirmed for Ubuntu Feisty as well. I'm changing it to "ubuntu base" since Kubuntu/Ubuntu/Edubuntu/Xubuntu all share that.

Mackenzie Morgan (maco.m) wrote :

I marked it hplip instead since it should have been pulled in with that and because "ubuntu-base" isn't an option (considered part of "ubuntu-meta" instead)

status: Unconfirmed → Confirmed

In Ubuntu Feisty hpijs-ppds does not need to be installed. PPDs are autogenerated by CUPS from foomatic-db-hpijs!
Rejecting Ubuntu Feisty task.

I'm not so familiar with KDE so I can't tell if hpijs-ppds should be installed for Kubuntu, does KDE use autogenerated PPDs?
If required by KDE this is a ubuntu-meta task and not a hplip task.

Should be: if required by KDE this is a kubuntu-meta task.

Not an issue on kubuntu. openprinting-ppds has all the files needed (this package is pulled in by linuxprinting-ppds), foomatic-db-hpijs also has source database... I don't see a point of including hpijs-ppds package

My Deskjet F340 was detected and installed with the HP utility, the
first time it has ever worked in Ubuntu. Even the scanner works, so the
package works great.

Mackenzie Morgan (maco.m) wrote :

Yes, it DOES need to be installed by default. My HP PSC 1610 was not automatically detected by HPLIP because this was not automatically installed. And it's also not just a Kubuntu thing. I'm using Ubuntu. Pascal, CUPS may have been able to figure out my printer, but HPLIP is another thing entirely. HPLIP couldn't do it without this package, and this package should be in there by default so that HPLIP works correctly instead of suggesting laserjet PPDs for an inkjet.

OK, confirming if you use hp-setup to set up your printer queue. Minor issue since most people will use gnome-cups-manager, KDE Print Manager or CUPS web interface to set up their printer queue => Low importance.
The hplip package recommends hpijs-ppds which is enough. I believe that recommended packages should be installed by default, but this requires the last point of this specification to be implemented first: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/AptEdgyImprovementsSpec. The only possibility for now is to add hpijs-ppds to ubuntu-desktop and kubuntu-desktop, but this will require 212.5 KB additional space on the desktop live CD.

I believe hp-setup should be in a separate package and this package should not be installed on Ubuntu by default since we have gnome-cups-manager or CUPS web interface which provide a generic way to set up a printer queue. Is this possible?

I think hp-setup should be installed by default because without it hp scanner printer comibination doesn't work out of the box and network installation of hp printers would be more complicated. This could be solved through the wiki but why make it more complicated if only a small additional packet is needed.

The most current version of HPLIP (1.7.3, in Feisty) does not need hpijs-ppds at all. The HP guys have fixed hp-setup so that it asks CUPS for PPDs instead of looking for physical files. CUPS calls the PPD generator of Foomatic which returns the HP PPDs (as you have probably already seen in the gnome-cups-manager, web interface or whatever printer setup tool). So if you are on Feisty, do a complete auto update and your problem will go away.

I had the problem even though my Feisty is completely up to date. I was told to install that package, so I did, and that made there be a PPD for my printer.

As explained by Till hp-setup asks CUPS for PPDs which are generated from foomatic-db-hpijs, I have verified this with my HP DeskJet 3820 printer. This was fixed in hplip 1.7.3-0ubuntu1.
maco and Enola Gay please remove hpijs-ppds, if you still have this problem please attach the output of the printingbug info script for some basic information about your printing setup. The printingbug info script can be found here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PrintingBugInfoScript.
