I have gnome and in the right upper corner there's a soundcontrol, I have a red cross over mine and it can't be changed. "No volume control GSstreamer plugins and/or no devices found"
When I open Mp3files with xmms it says
"please check that your soundcard is configured properly, you have a correct output plugin selected, no other program is blocking the soundcard"

same problem on T20 (cs46xx) using Dapper kernel 2.6.15-23-386
i tryed with alsa, esd and with all options available without success
| ciasaboark (ciasaboark) wrote : | #3 |
I can confirm this on dapper using a soundblaster live. Sound output works fine, and mic input works (i can hear my own voice over the speakers), but recording mic input in any application fails. Only silence is recorded. Mic and capture are both set as the record device, neither are muted, and sound is turned up to 100%. I've seen posts with similar problems on the ubuntu formums, but so far there isn't a solution. If it is a kernel problem it affects as far back as 2.6.15-20 (current is 2.6.15-26). If its not, then I have no idea what package the bug is in.

i'm using thinkpad t42. i installed skype and tested using skype's echo service. i could hear the response but couldn't hear myself.
so what i did was go to System>
i changed the default Input Plugin from "ALSA ..." to "OSS..." and the microphone worked.
i read in the help button of the same dialog that different applications use different sound architectures. apparently skype is using OSS instead of ALSA. (this is my conclusion and not verified technically)
hope this helps
Several months past after this post, now I am using Ubuntu 6.06. No matter "ALSA ..." or "OSS..." , the sound recorder does't work yet. (died after pressing the record button).
I have to up-regulated the importance.
Help.....

This problem co-occurs in sound recorder (genome media) and skype.
| Jame (lliyan) wrote : | #7 |
It is a bug in ubuntu, because it is ok in MEPIS.

Thank Capriccio for the following information.
The skype can be worked properly now.
1. backup your existing /etc/modprobe.
2. append the following to the end of the file:
options snd-hda-intel model=ref
3. reload your modules or reboot.
4. Audio system set to "OSS" in the skype option.
But Gnome-Media sound-recorder doesn't work yet.

Confirmed on a Thinkpad T43 with kernel version 2.6.17-10 on Edgy. **This is a regression! Worked on Breezy!**

Note that this is a regression bug, not a first-check of functionality.

There seems to be _tremendous_ confusion regarding the inability to capture audible audio in Linux on PCI sound devices. For the sake of good bug reporting practices, I'm going to enumerate several commands, the output from which all audio bug reports should include.
1) tail -2 /proc/asound/
The above command lists the codecs involved. The output from this command is _vital_. Different codecs pushing the same driver (say, intel8x0, emu10k1, or hda-intel) exhibit a huge variation in errata. This bug report alone covers _four_ distinct codecs, none of which are solely to blame. See the following point:
2) amixer
It is _imperative_ that you include the amixer output from your preferred (the one that's giving you said recording problems) audio device. The community has spent years documenting known mixer issues on http://
3) lspci -nv
The actual {sub,}{
4) asoundconf list
This script command (which is really just filtered cat /proc/asound/cards) lists the enumerated sound devices on your system.
5) cat /etc/asound.conf ~/.asoundrc*
We need to know if you've modified any runtime configuration files that affect how alsa-lib interacts with your sound devices. The nonexistence of the above files is not a problem.
6) dmesg
Many codecs and drivers, upon initialisation, will spit something via printk() into the kernel ring buffer. Any diagnostic messages will appear in this output.
And last but certainly not least:
7) cat /proc/interrupts
Sound devices require resources. We need to see if those resources are properly assigned.

I forgot to mention that this is in Dapper.
