Bug Description

Binary package hint: linux-source-2.6.17

Hi,
after adding "elevator=cfq" to my boot options in grub's menu.lst, I couldn't use my WLan anymore. It said something like "add irqpoll". After adding irqpoll to the startup options, it worked as before.

My Laptop: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LaptopTestingTeam/AcerAspire5024WLMi
It's a bcm43xx-chipset.

I can't reproduce this problem. Where did you find the advice to add the irqpoll option? Please attach (do not inline) the output of these commands without the irqpoll boot option:

sudo dmidecode > dmidecode.txt
lspci -vv > lspci.txt
dmesg > dmesg.txt

Hi,

some additional info:
* This didn't occure in Edgy 32bit
* With no parametres "irqpoll elevator=cfq" I get a message (after logging in into gdm): "Could not initialise HAL".
* WLan won't work (bcm43xx)
* dmesg says "try irqpoll - if it works, report it as a bug" ;-)

Have you considered not using cfq? Forcing irqpoll is causing lots of other problems. Look in your dmesg log.

using elevator=cfq only gives a hal error. whatever.

Yeah, unsetting irqpoll messed up everything (i.e. booting default way).
My Network is not being recognized, I can see "error loading ibm_acpi" at startup.
When restarting network, no cable networks are found.

Loading my Wireless driver/module "bmc43xx" and "acer_acpi" freezes my laptop.

Just look at this and the following thread. Now you know why I enabled irqpoll - dmesg told me. And it made life easier.

I re-enabled irqpoll (but not elevator=cfq) until it is solved. I really need networking.

Regards & Thanks for helping.

Some interesting networtk-restart output. Just watch the 2nd last paragraph. Looks scary to me.

And well, i don't think it happend in 32 bit version. Really.

I just noticed that you are still on Edgy (2.6.17). How about getting the Feisty daily at http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current, burn a CD and boot from it. You don't have to install Feisty in order to test if irqpoll is still required. There have been a huge number of APIC and ACPI related changes. By Monday there will be even more, several having to do with JMicron controller quirks.

Ha... well, why not. Sounds promising!

I'll give it a try by Monday and report to you then.

Well, it's just nasty to compile things on a live-system... I need to load and unload some modules and so on.

Thanks for the link and your help so far, although I'd love to know what causes this error - which doesn't even occur on 32bit-edgy.

Regards,
-> B.M.

Invalid, because could be avoided - misunderstanding of original purpose.
