Bug Description

i can't install ubuntu-7.04-i386-alternate-herd5 (no cd-rom found), but can install ubuntu-7.04-i386-desktop-herd5. So after reboot i can't load ubuntu and see just
ata1.0: failed to set xfermode (err_mask=0x4)
ata2.0: failed to set xfermode (err_mask=0x4)
My system:
Core 2 Duo E6300
Motherboard - Foxconn P9657AA-8KS2H
DVD±RW - Samsung SH-W183A/SH-S183A SATA
HDD - Western Digital (WD2500KS) 7200 16Mb SATA II 250,0 Gb

My fix this problem:
i boot with slax, mount my sda and in /etc/fstab i see (imho) crasy line - /dev/scd0 and so i rename it to /dev/sr0 (1st problem with SATA-DVD±RW were fixed)
when i reboot i see that my ubuntu can't read uuid, then i delete uuid from /etc/fstab & uncomment my /dev/sda1, /dev/sda3 etc.

Now i can boot my system without problems/

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. When running the desktop CD could you please execute the following commands, 'lspci -vv' and 'lspic -vvn', and add the output as attachments to your bug report? Thanks in advance.

Sometimes (~10-15% causes) i need to boot from cd-rom first and then i can boot from hdd.

Seems to be more of an issue with a missing scd0 link

Please get the Feisty Beta from http://www.ubuntu.com/news/Ubuntu704Beta. There are many lib-ata related fixes, one of which will likely fix your problem.

Please attach (do not inline) the contents of these commands after boot the Feisty Beta:

dmesg > dmesg.txt
sudo dmidecode > dmidecode.txt

I would like to know what makes your boot process variable. It should happen the same way every time.

More lib-ata kernel fixes are coming. Boot the daily ISO from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current on Monday. The kernel revision must be at least 2.6.20-14.

Same problem with current desktop cd (29/03, kernel 2.6.20-13). Except I can't even boot from the cd, and I get the same errors :
ata1.0: failed to set xfermode (err_mask=0x4)
ata2.0: failed to set xfermode (err_mask=0x4)

My system:
Core 2 Duo E6300
Motherboard - MSI 965 Neo
DVD±RW - Samsung SH-W133A SATA
HDD SATA II

I'm waiting for kernel 2.6.20-14 in the daily build and will report here success or failure.

Same problem with all desktop cd, but:

i don't know why, but in ~20% causes desktop-cd boot when manualy change resolution (from VGA -> 1600-1200) & language
i can boot desktop-cd only with 1024x768@32/1280x1024@16 & russian or english-us

edit kernel line when boot (remove uuid and enter /dev/sda3)

Tim Gardner (timg-tpi) wrote :

Its not clear to me if you are booting from the Live CD, or from your hard drive. If from your hard drive, then it sounds like you might have a garbled grub entry. Look at /boot/grub/menu.lst and make sure the 'kernel' line looks something like:

kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.20-13-generic root=UUID=1d2edee6-985a-4908-b06b-42c460fbb075 ro quiet splash

Works with April 06 build if I put option "irqpoll" at boot.

Can boot with option "irqpoll" in ~50% causes.
May be problem in motherboard.
Now using Gigabyte S3 - all is ok.
