Bug Description

This bug already existed in Dapper, Edgy and now in the Feisty alpha, too.
The sound card is a Aureal Vortex and the used driver (I think it's the driver - could be model name, bur I don't think so) is au8820.
BUG:
A programm using sound is running, after it's closed no other app will be able to send sound to the driver.

DMESG tells this: I think this is the bug, because this appears each time it bugs...
[ 397.354794] Vortex: vortex_fifo_setadbctrl fail

To reproduze try playing a flv 'stolen' from youtube.com with mplayer use arrows keys a few times and soon sound driver should crash (-;

"so i looked up the pci register fix put the line "install snd-au8830 /sbin/setpci -d '12eb:*' 40.B=ff ; insmod snd-au8830" in my modules.conf and everything worked fine."
I'm not sure if this really works, because I had no /etc/modules.conf . Now I do (-;

It unfortunately appears that this bug is not yet resolved. Would it be possible to test whether issue still exist in the Hardy Heron 8.04 LTS release?

If so, the Intrepid Ibex 8.10 Alpha2 is also scheduled for release today. It will appear at the following when available: http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/intrepid/alpha2 . It contains the actively developed 2.6.26 Ubuntu kernel. It would be great if you could test this upcoming release via a LiveCD and verify if the issue still exists. If so, please include the appropriate debugging information as outlined at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingSoundProblems . Thanks in advance.

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

I'd love to help. But I don't have this computer arround anymore, nor
the sound card. So I'm very sorry an I hope you'll find some other guy
using it...

Thanks for the update Nikolai. However, since you are the original bug reporter and you no longer have the hardware available to test I'm going to close this report for now. If anyone else subscribed here has the same hardware and is able to reproduce the issue and subsequently test the 2.6.27 kernel that would be great. If the issue reamains with 2.6.27, please feel free to then reopen this report by setting the status back to "New". Thanks.
