Hi, thanks for your bug report. We need some more information though to be able to solve the problem:
* Which version of Ubuntu are you using? (Breezy/Dapper/Edgy/Feisty?)
* Which version of nautilus do you use (check with "nautilus --version" in terminal)
* Which file is it about? (what type + open terminal and "cd /home/user/path/to/directory/of/file" and then "ls -al > ~/Desktop/log.txt", and then post the file here)

I forgot, another question: what exactly is a "system crash"? What exactly crashed? Did you have to force-quit nautilus, your whole screen froze, what happened?

So, it crashed when you right click in a folder to show its properties, right?

I want you to open a terminal window: go to Applications > Accessories > Terminal. Type there "nautilus --version" (without the ""), and press Enter. It then says something like "Gnome nautilus x.xx.x", I need the numbers there :) so please add them here.

Ok, we're advancing, good :)

Does it happen when:
a) viewing the properties of a file, or
b) viewing the properties of a folder

In case a):
* What type of file is it? (ods, ppt, mp3, something else)
* Does it happen to other files of that type too?
* Does it happen to other files in general?

In case b)
* Where is the folder located? (local harddrive, usb stick, server, ...)
* Does it happen in other folders too?

In case a) and case b), so always:
* Browse to the folder which has the problem, or the folder which contains the file which has the problem, and press Ctrl+L followed by Ctrl+C.
* Open up a terminal window and type "ls -al [[Ctrl+Shift+V]] > ~/Desktop/output.txt", where [[Ctrl+Shift+V]] is of course replace by pressing those keys.
* Go to https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/80492 and click 'Add comment/attachment' and attach the output.txt file which is on your desktop.

the crash is probably due to totem, could you get a backtrace (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Backtrace) for it then?

I had the same identical problem.
Gnome nautilus 2.16.1
I was in the trash: right click on an .avi file (divx more than 600Mb). BAng§: nautilus crashed (only nautilus and the trash window): firefox and amule still working.
amule was running in another workspace (but this isn't so important, i think)
Amule version is "Adunanza" (aMule AdunanzA 3.11b )
Totem WAS NOT running.

I had some other cases similar to this when running Totem and/or Serpentine.
In those case i was trying to rename the "properties" of an .mp3 file.
