Bug Description
Binary package hint: openoffice.org
Since Edgy OpenOffice crashes fequently and is absolutly unuseable!
Steps to reproduce:
Create a new text document instert a bit text, a insert a formular or image and save it (I used my home diretory).
Use the mouse to select a bit of the text and the inserted formula or image.
OpenOffice crashes as you release the mouse button.
I also had crashes like that with text-only documents and spreadsheads, but they are hard to reproduce.
All documents I work with contain images or formulas, so Edgy is completely unuseable for me.
Hardware:
Laptop: Acer Extensa 2902LMi
Software (original Edgy Repos):
Kubuntu Edgy (i386) with Kernel 2.6.17-10-generic
OpenOffice.org 2.0.4-0ubuntu2, Mon Oct 16 01:14:49 UTC 2006

Same problem here.
I found that running oowriter with kdesu (kdesu oowriter) didn't crash the applications so i was using it as a workaround.
After using the repository linked above the error disappeared.
My Specifications:
Laptop Compal hel80
Processor t2300 (core duo)
1 GB RAM
nvidia 7600 Go (with nvidia propietary driver loaded)

After using the repository linked above the error disappeared.
Thanks

Same problem, same solution (thanks for the reposistory).
Desktop AMD Athlon 900, Nvidia geforce2MX with nvidia driver
Kubuntu Edgy (i386) with Kernel 2.6.17-10-generic

The key, I found, is that the crash occurs when the *display* is on KDE, irrespective of whether the display is on the local Ubuntu machine that is running OOo or a remote machine (e.g., SUSE) connecting to the Ubuntu machine using ssh -Y.
It does not happen on displays running (at least) Gnome and Windowmaker.
Client machines (running Edgy):
Dell Inspiron X1 (32-bit Pentium M, 512MB)
AMD-64 3000+ (64-bit) 1G)
X-servers running on (in addition to the client machines)
SUSE10.1 Pentium D 64-bit Dual Core, 2G
SUSE10.1 Dell Inspiron Pentium M 32-bit
The problem always follows the use of an X server running a KDE display, irrespective of where OOo is running.
FWIW, the 64-bit build of OOo 2.0.4 in SUSE10.2Beta1 does NOT exhibit these crashes.

What's your key so I can sign this repository?

The packages from http://
Would it be possible to have them (or something including the same fix) distributed through the standard apt repositories as a bug fix for edgy?
This bug is really a huge showstopper for people using Linux on the desktop. It basically means that ubuntu edgy contrarily to any other Linux distro ships without a usable office application and cannot collaborate with people using ms office.

A quick fix for this bug is to disable Klipper (clipboard tool).
With Klipper closed OO works as expected again.
Anyway, this is a very annoying bug and I totally agree with anyone who claims this could easily drive people away from (k)Ubuntu/Linux and should have been fixed long ago...

I wasn't even aware of Klipper's existence until now. I agree this is
a major (if only from a psychological standpoint) issue. Two of my
friends nearly dropped Kubuntu because of it.

I can confirm that OOo work fine if Klipper is disabled.
