FWIW, duplicate #81984 has crash file attached, in addition to automagic attachments (/var/crash/_usr_bin_update-manager.1000.crash).

Work around till solved: use sudo / gksudo.

 with the work around "I used the terminal, this time I was able to get the update ,but while updating a small black icon appeared. It said this could be for now or a update crash from the past. The update manager appeared clicked install update. The terminal gave a report of synaptic: 23018:) libglade -warning **: Error loading image : Failed to open file /usr/share/synaptic/glade/system-upgrade ': No such file or directory

(synaptic: 23018) : libglade-warning **: could not convert string to type ` GdkPixb uf' for property ` pixuf '

(synaptic: 23018_ : libglade-warning **: Couldn't find image file: system-upgrade

This should be fixed with the uplaod of 0.53.5. Please reopen if that does not fix the issue for you.
