Ubuntu Feisty on amd64. After installing from Herd2 CD I had black & white usplash but after two updates to usplash I have only black screen while booting.

If you remove /etc/usplash.conf and rebuild the initramfs (update-initramfs -u) it works again.

Indeed. Now it's back to "normal":

This happened due to the kernel getting more strict about out-of-range resolutions. usplash now tolerates this; though with the simultaneous fix for bug 67545 you probably won't notice this fix.
usplash (0.4-36) feisty; urgency=low
* Fix path in example theme Makefile (LP: #73005).
* Depend on debconf.
* Update usplash_write(8) to document TEXT-URGENT and PULSATE.
* Switch to libx86, fixing svgalib on amd64 (LP: #67545).
* Don't fall over if the bogl backend can't set the resolution, which
won't be possible on several framebuffer implementations (LP: #81413).

This is not fixed... now i get text messages at boot but still no usplash at boot only on shutdown. AMD64 on Nvidia here.

I just installed the amd64 version of Ubuntu Herd 3, and I get this message whenever I boot:
bogl_init failed: setting screen size: Cannot allocate memory
screen init failed
(AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 4200, nVidia 7600 GT, K9N Neo nForce 550)
The usplash comes up fine however if I use 32-bit Ubuntu.
