Bug Description

Binary package hint: xen-source-2.6.17

Support page: https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+ticket/2237

This bug was opened upon confirmation by other users, that they expirience the same problem. The problem does not appear if the xen-source from xensource.com ist used. This leads to my assumption that a ubuntu-specific patch in the xen-source package leads to the problem.

The first DomU starts fine, but upon start of a very similar DomU the Dom0 Kernel oops.

I placed myself in same config as Dmitriy Ivanov, I disabled my HyperThreading on my p4, and managed to run a 2nd domU, but more interesting I managed a third DomU successfully !!!!

Here is my domU config (generated with the xen-tools packages) :

kernel = '/boot/xen0-linux-2.6.17-6-generic-xen0'
ramdisk = '/boot/xen0-linux-2.6.17-6-generic-xen0.initrd.img'
memory = '256'
root = '/dev/sda1 ro'
disk = [ 'phy:data/xen2-disk,sda1,w',
            'phy:data/xen2-swap,sda2,w' ] # LVM on dom0
name = 'xen3'
vif = [ 'bridge=xenbr0' ]
vcpus = 1
on_poweroff = 'destroy'
on_reboot = 'restart'
on_crash = 'restart'

My dom0 uses the edgy xen packages + xen-tools + libc6-xen

The binary kernel 2.6.16 from xen source works without problems.

I can confirm the crash. DomU are 2x Edgy installed via xen-create-image.
Kernel is xen-image-xen0-2.6.17-6-generic-xen0 (both Dom0 and DomU).
Hypervisor is xen-hypervisor-3.0-i386.

The kernel panic occurs regardless of which of the two DomUs is started first.

When I use the binary package provided by xensource, both DomUs boot up, although they still use the Ubuntu-provided kernel.

The DomUs are stored on disk, I do not use LVM.

IIRC I once managed to also have two DomU's and having the third crash my system, but can't remember how I managed that.

This is my CPU, AFAICS it has HT support, but either I deactivated it in the BIOS or it's not active for other reasons - but haven't changed that ages ago, so IMHO my issue is not HT relatead.

AFAICS the DomU Kernels do not cause the crash - IMHO it does not matter what kind of DomU Linux you start, only the Dom0 Kernel matters. It might even not matter if the DomU is Linux - anybody tested with BSD? (I don't have a current CPU :(, thus no VX support)

Looking on the xensource.com pages _the only_ kernel for Dom0 is 2.6.16.29 even
for FC5 and OpenSuse 10. Right now I would consider any other Xen Dom0 kernel as
dangerous because the changes between the Linux versions need to be carefully reviewed
by someone how understands the inner happenings of Xen.

This leads up to this situation:
- I don't see a sufficiently Xen version of a supported distro kernel in the near future, because
  it would mean some serious effort of development and testing capacity
- The "support state" of the "official" Xen kernel is unclear (at least to me) regarding
  critical bug and security fixes

Well, this is not 100% accurate. FC6 ships with a Xen-enabled 2.6.18 kernel.
However, I have not tested if this kernel also crashes as discussed here.

Just hit this problem too. Dom0 and DomU work fine, as soon as 2nd DomU is startet, machine panics and reboots.
As some of you guys said, it's working with Xensource-Binaries: How does one use them? Where to get and most important: Where to put, so that they are used and problem is solved?

Phoenix (phoenix-dominion) wrote :

There might be several ways, but this is the road I took

I grabed the binary kernel from the XEN LiveCD, you may also fetch the tarball and build a Kernel of your own. Once you have that kernel, you follow the usual "How to install a new kernel" (copy the kernel and if needed the initrd to /boot, and add them to GRUB (don't forget the Hypervisor :) )).

AFAICS you only need a *working* Dom0 Kernel, it doesn't matter which Kernel your DomU loads - as said, AFAICS, the _number_ of DomU crashes the Dom0 and not a specific DomU kernel.

Thanks Phoenix for your hints, but that's not what I want/need. If I unterstood the above correctly, Ubuntu-Kernel works too, but with the original binaries, and that's what I want (what I really want is a fix, sure *g*)

Phoenix is right.
Nab the binary package from xensource. You don't need to use the installer script. Just use what's in the boot and modules directory.
And 'bobs your uncle'.
Well... it works for me anyway.

I had the occasion to test the edgy Xen on this HW : dual p3 1Ghz , 1500Mb RAM, basic 40Go HDD. So a real SMP not a p4 with HT

I got problem at launching 3rd DomU . Last thing I saw on Dom0 console was a kernel Panic.

Below is my config :

Dom0 : libc6-xen + xen-image-generic + xen-utils + xen-tools

DomU config (3 * same but alsa crashes with 3 differents) :

kernel = '/boot/xen0-linux-2.6.17-6-generic-xen0'
ramdisk = '/boot/xen0-linux-2.6.17-6-generic-xen0.initrd.img'
memory = '128'
root = '/dev/sda1 ro'
disk = [ 'phy:vg/sarge1-disk,sda1,w',
            'phy:vg/sarge1-swap,sda2,w' ]
vcpus = 1
name = 'sarge1'
vif = [ 'bridge=xenbr0' ]
on_poweroff = 'destroy'
on_reboot = 'restart'
on_crash = 'restart'

Hello,
    I also confirmed that running a 2nd DomU crashes Dom0 when HT is on.

Another one here... crash at start of 3rd DomU (kernel panic - no traces in dmesg or syslog however)

Config:
Compaq evo laptop
640Mb ram
800MHz cpu
Kernel: Xen: 3.0.3 on Ubuntu Edgy (2.6.17-6-generic-xen0)
I did a vanilla server install of Edgy then installed the binary tarball from Xensource.

I also mentioned this issue at: http://lists.xensource.com/archives/html/xen-users/2006-11/msg00203.html
Every respondent used an AMD cpu - so not very helpful thusfar....

Same crash here too. At the start of the 3rd DomU. kernel panic and reboot of dom0 machine.

Old 300mhz pentium 3 with 512mb ram
kernel: Xen: 3.0.3 on Ubuntu Edgy (2.6.17-6-generic-xen0) [ubuntu server install]
Using LVM domU's

John Leach (johnleach) wrote : Re: Dom0 crashes upon start of second DomU workaround

same here on an Intel(R) Pentium(R) D CPU 2.66GHz

I've worked around this by installing the Debian Xen kernel package on the Dom0 and DomU machines: linux-image-2.6.18-3-xen-686. It pulls in the Debian Xen tools too, but doesn't clobber anything Ubuntu specific.

Meanwhile I got myself a new CPU, an Intel with the virtualisation Extension to run native OS'es - right now I'm running a custom Kernel (made with the ubuntu-xen-source), as I tried to have fbcon, which for some reason I was not having with the default kernel and still don't have with my custom kernel.

Anyhow, right now I'm running some >50 domains without a crash.... though native (read: vmx) ones.

I haven't tried any of the xen-modified guests (well, I lost them with the new disk-layout and haven't created new ones yet) - so I can't say, if my problems still persist with the new CPU if I run xen-modified Systems.

Though I do have one off-topic hint - I'm running the base (dom0) on a USB CF, which is rather slow - so to startup 50 systems, xen does a lot in the xenstore directory /var/lib/xenstored, which basically makes the system crawl, I changed that now to a tmpfs... and it has now a lot of speed (though it could be faster for my taste....), but I fear suspend won't work anymore, but that is none of my concern.

regards
Philipp

I've seen the crash too (Core2Duo T6600) and the only way to work around it for me was to completely remove all of Ubuntu's Xen stuff and install the latext Xen 3.0.4 from source. Before, it would freeze when starting the 3rd guest, now I can run as much as I like.

Question: Why is importance still undecided? Looks to me, that there is no plan to fix that and that's a shame imho...

A pity, yes. This problem forces me to abandon Ubuntu and use Debian. And once I've configured it - I'm not keen to switch my production environment back again. The more demanding user is being disappointed this way. What's better? Many fysical Ubuntu server or many of them being virtual? I know the answer :-) I think this should be given more priority.

Well, we try to live with only one DomU atm, works in most of cases, but not always, but we don't want to abandon Ubuntu (yet) and I really hope, that this will be fixed asap, but as neiter importance is set nor the bug itself is assigned... I don't wanna think louder and further :-(

Maybe it helps telling you that the same error occurs on Debian (etch, SMP, i686 on DELL Poweredge 2950 with 2 Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU (meaning 4 cores)). Xen installed from 3.0.4 binary release. As this is not my first Xen install I'm quite surprised but'd rather guess its a Debian platform provided architecture problem than an Ubuntu specific one.

Please note, that It worked for me with the only thing replaced was the kernel+modules, though that was 3.0.3, _everything_ else was from ubuntu.

I am still investigating the same error on Debian edge and found a hint there might be problems with a broken udev package not acting as expected.

As this might also be a xen related bug I issued a bug report last week:

Caspar: I tried Xen 3.0.4 binaries for 64 bit and I could run more than 2 domU without problems on Ubuntu LTS server (amd64); however, I had confirmed this issue with Ubuntu Edgy packages before trying Dapper with Xen binaries.

Thus, I'd say it's a problem with either Debian or Ubuntu kernel patches.

Hi Chuck,

The feisty xen image (2.6.19-4-server and 2.6.19-4-generic) sadly do not work for me, as they lack the CONFIG_BLK_DEV_DM_BBR kernel option - this means that EVMS won't run under these kernels, and I can't start up my domU's as they live on various EVMS volumes.

With the feisty freeze just a couple of days away now, is there any change of an EVMS-aware Xen-enabled kernel package? Should I pull down the sources for the xen-2.6.19-4-server package and try rolling my own?

Thanks,

Andrew S.

Hi Chuck,

I can see in http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/universe/x/xen-source/ that a xen-source_2.6.19-2ubuntu7.diff.gz and xen-source_2.6.19-2ubuntu7.dsc have appeared, but no .debs?

Are we waiting on an autobuilder, or is approval needed from the release team? Is there a copy of the .deb somewhere so I can try it and see if the fix works for me?

Thanks,

Andrew S.

Never mind, the .debs did show up a day later.

I still can't boot my server with them because (a) the (EVMS) dm_bbr patch isn't included in the xen-source-2.6.19 package, and (b) when added, the dm_bbr module won't build under 2.6.19 anyway ... but that's an EVMS problem, not a Xen problem. =)
