Bug Description

Binary package hint: yaboot

I am attempting an install on an iMac G3 333MHz (Green) machine I've nabbed. The Debian Sarge, Dapper and Edgy Ubuntu CDs do not boot with this machine; I get to the yaboot prompt and can't hit any keys (enter being the one I'm aiming for!) and therefore cannot proceed.

I switched this approach for a netboot based install, and added the following to yaboot.conf:
timeout=1
which loads the kernel/initrd but the ramdisk fails to load (yaboot method load failed 000000900 ramdisk load failed).

However -- I am glad to report this problem does not occur with Debian/etch as at 26/01/2007 and am performing an installation of Etch now, but clearly there is something wrong with the yaboots from Ubuntu and earlier Debians...

Maybe bug 26426 ?

True enough, the initrd in Edgy is >6.1 MB while the initrd in Etch is <6.1MB, so this may be the case.

Thank you for doing your part to make Ubuntu better. Since this bug was originally reported against Edgy Eft(6.10), I was wondering if this bug can still be reproduced on a supported version of Ubuntu?

 Thanks,

I understand powerpc support has been dropped from the latest versions (official support anyway). Would you prefer me to test this with the latest Dapper or the Gutsy powerpc port?

Tomasz,

Powerpc is community ported. So there are CD images available for powerpc even for latest versions. http://cdimages.ubuntu.com/ports/

Hi,

Yep I've got a Gutsy image; my question was related more to which "latest version" you'd like me to try out:
Ubuntu Dapper (latest official supported version), or
Ubuntu Gutsy (latest version overall)?

Or both even?

Hi Tomasz,

the latest version at the moment is Hardy, which you can get here: http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ports/releases/8.04.1/release/

Hi,

I've done a Hardy test and it worked fine this time, which is great news. So I'm happy for this to be marked as resolved.

Thanks.

Closing out since issue is no longer reproducible in Hardy by original reporter.
