A trigram-based tool for detecting similarity in groups of text documents or program code.

Ferret was created at the University of Hertfordshire by the one-time Plagiarism Detection Group and developed by Ruth Barrett, Bob Dickerson, Caroline Lyon and James Malcolm. The program was extended to work with the Chinese language by Jun-Peng Bao, and Pam Green has shown how to extract more precise information on duplicate material from Ferret's output. Peter Lane has implemented the code within this project.

There have been several versions of this project:

* trunk: the latest command-line, Go version.

* ferret-wxwidgets: the original C++ with wxWidgets GUI code. [Currently not maintained, but stored in a separate branch here.]

* uhferret-gem: a command-line version implemented as a Ruby wrapper around the C++ code. For details, see https://peterlane.netlify.com/uhferret/
