awke is awk with extensions. These extensions are functions and constants written in the awk programming language, and they appear to the end-user as if they were built-in functions.

awke is engineered to enhance existing awk implementations rather than to replace them. gawk, for example, forces its users into a portability ghetto by introducing its own extensions to the language which are incompatible with nawk, mawk, or other implementations. awke is designed to enhance any reasonably modern awk implementation without sacrificing portability or compatibility with existing scripts.
