I am familiar, mainly as a "user" though, with Linux since about the mid-nineties, having put to work different distros (Slackware, SuSE, Debian, Ubuntu). Over the last years I resorted to Ubuntu due to its quite well-done adaptation of packages for immediate use without the need of much post-tinkering.

I'm interested in Linux/Ubuntu as a true alternative for general computing, including some more elaborated applications as writing scientific publications and preparing the required data for them. This includes also applying Linux as the base operating system for scientific computing like solving of partial differential equations or physical raytracing.
