I'm an educator and linux hobbyist/enthusiast. I've been involved in linux (mostly running it on my desktop) since about 1996. I'm one of those "zealots" who uses FOSS for philosophical reasons. I believe it's appropriate to surrender access to convenience, ease and "bling" to support openness and intellectual freedom. I love linux because I love the idea of free and open software, however I tend to readily acknowledge the flaws and shortcomings of linux and OSS. Any advocacy I do tends to be based on this kind of philosophical approach rather than promising poor potential converts a superior user experience. That said I certainly long for the day FOSS provides the most natural, exciting and productive computing environment available.
