These builds of FFmpeg 6 have support for rav1e (Rust based AV1 encoder), AMD AMF (Advanced Media Framework), JPEG-XL & LCMS2, and Netflix VMAF.

Update (8 Apr 2023): FFmpeg 6.0 builds here are now with nv-codec-headers 12.0.16.0 (latest version) which requires nVidia >= 520.56.06 drivers!

Update (23 Mar 2023): FFmpeg 6.0 builds here are now with iLBC (Internet Low Bandwidth Codec) and VapourSynth support. Now for "subscribers only"!

Note for Noble: Thanks to a business sponsor of Ubuntu 24.04 LTS builds of FFmpeg 6.1.1 this version is now available to private PPA users. For this new Ubuntu version the public FFmpeg 4 PPA is NOT required, so ignore the instructions for Jammy & earlier (below). Installation of FFmpeg 6.1.1 on Noble requires both the multimedia PPA (ppa:savoury1/multimedia) and the private PPA. With the private PPA added then do these steps for install:

  sudo add-apt-repository ppa:savoury1/multimedia
  sudo add-apt-repository ppa:savoury1/ffmpeg6
  sudo apt-get update
  sudo apt-get upgrade && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
  sudo apt-get install ffmpeg

Notes for Jammy & earlier: FFmpeg builds here depend on the public FFmpeg PPA (ppa:savoury1/ffmpeg4), and the private PPA (ppa:savoury1/ffmpeg) for installation. Any who have donated can contact me requesting access to the private PPA. With the private PPA added then do these steps for install:

  sudo add-apt-repository ppa:savoury1/ffmpeg4
  sudo add-apt-repository ppa:savoury1/ffmpeg6
  sudo apt-get update
  sudo apt-get upgrade && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
  sudo apt-get install ffmpeg
