FFmpeg 8 - media tool (Xenial & newer)

Latest FFmpeg 8.0.1 (requires ppa:savoury1/ffmpeg) for Xenial & newer.

These builds of FFmpeg 8 have support for rav1e (Rust based AV1 encoder), AMD AMF (Advanced Media Framework), JPEG-XL & LCMS2, and Netflix VMAF.

*** Install ***

FFmpeg builds here depend on the public FFmpeg PPA (ppa:savoury1/ffmpeg4) for Ubuntu <= 22.04 or on the multimedia PPA (ppa:savoury1/multimedia) for Ubuntu >= 24.04, and also on the private FFmpeg PPA (ppa:savoury1/ffmpeg). Any who have donated can contact me requesting access to the private PPA. Once you have been granted private PPA access do these steps for install:

On Ubuntu <= 22.04 based systems add the following PPA for dependencies:

  sudo add-apt-repository ppa:savoury1/ffmpeg4

On Ubuntu >= 24.04 based systems add the following PPA for dependencies:

  sudo add-apt-repository ppa:savoury1/multimedia

Then do these commands after adding the required PPA mentioned above:

  sudo add-apt-repository ppa:savoury1/ffmpeg8
  sudo apt-get update
  sudo apt-get upgrade && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
  sudo apt-get install ffmpeg
