Bug Description

Binary package hint: gdm

After working flawlessly in earlier Feisty Betas, the ability to resume from hibernation stopped working close to Feisty release. It started working again sometimes but nowadays a resume never works.

I get back into a black screen with a mousepointer displaying the "Thinking" mouse pointer. Every 15 seconds or so the pointer goes away and repositions itself in the middle of the screen. Is GDM constantly restarting? I don't know - because I find no way to troubleshoot it!

I cannot access any other terminal (Ctrl + Alt + F#), and Ctrl + Alt + Backspace does nothing...

If I press the power button on my laptop it will eventually shutdown (displaying some garbled lines of graphics in the top of the screen before going down all the way).

First mentioned in forumthread: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=415034

I will attach an output from Alt + SysRq + T (at least the kernel responds...). Please help me specify what else kind of information is needed to track this down.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. This bug does not meet the criteria for a stable release update and is being marked as Won't Fix for this particular version of the kernel. You can learn more about the stable release update process at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates .
However, the issue that you reported is one that should be possible to test with the live environment of the Desktop CD of the development release - Gutsy Gibbon. It would help us greatly if you could test with it so we can work on getting it fixed in the actively developed kernel. You can find out more about the development release at http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/ .
If you do decide to test with the development release of Ubuntu please comment on this bug report and include at least the minimal information requested at http://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies . Thanks again and we appreciate your help.

Changed in linux-source-2.6.20:
assignee: ubuntu-kernel-acpi → brian-murray
status: Confirmed → Won't Fix

Is it helpful at all to provide the relevant information using the current Feisty kernel or should we directly try with the latest Gutsy tribe kernel?

When does this data need to be submitted here in order for this bug to be fixed in time for Gutsy (I don't expect any promises from anyone - just a good guess to help maximize the possibility of a fix).

PS I believe it does match the criterias for a stable release update:

This bug seems to affect all HP Pavilion dv4000 as well as Dell Inspiron 6000 Ubuntu users, and a regression of perfectly working suspend functionality = Severe regression in those users eyes! For these users, there is a higher risk of losing data as they have to transport their laptops powered on to not have to shut down all applications between every computer move. This leads to increased risk for overheating and hard drive failures. Not the ordinary type of data loss I guess, but anyway...

I misunderstood the significance of "...for this particular version of the kernel. " - my mind was set on the targeted Gutsy kernel and fully understand that this bug currently doesn't meet the criteria for a Feisty kernel update.

PS Maybe you should update the stock response template to say "...for this particular version of the kernel, against which your bug was reported." instead.

Testing with the latest version of the Gutsy kernel would be the most useful.

Thanks for your comment regarding my stock reply - I have updated the wording to be clearer.

Bah... Still no working suspend nor hibernate in Gutsy.

When I now more I guess I'll have to report a new bug report.
