System freeze randomly

Bug Description

The system freezes randomly. I read all other bug reports about system freeze but in almost all cases they had some special configurations or running firefox. To me it happens either when I have gaim opened and chatting with a friend, or when I'm watching a movie with Totem movie player(it's the only application opened). It happened with VLC also but that was on Beryl and maybe this is not the case. In another report i read about a system freeze with Network Manager turned on. I deselected it now. I hope that was the problem. That's all. Thanks for all your work. It's my first linux based OS, but I love it :).

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. When you say system freeze what exactly do you mean and how did you go about resolving it? Are things now working for you since you have removed network-manager? Thanks in advance.

Hi there,

Well the system freezed .. no mouse/keyboard
activity.
I tried to restart X with Ctrl+Alt+BackSpace or
Ctrl+Alt+R or Ctrl+Alt+Sys but still nothing. The only
thing that worked was the reset button.
When I installed Ubuntu it worked fine in that
evening, but in the next day I started Ubuntu and
opened Gaim and Totem movie player to watch a movie.
The system freezed while i was watching the movie. I
restarted the computer and the same thing happened
again. Sometimes it freezes even if I don't watch a
movie. But the most frequent cases were while i
watched some movie.

The network manager? I read about it in a post on a
topic that was very similar. I turned off the network
manager but then while I was reading more on that
topic it seemed that, for that guy, even with the
network manager turned off it still didn't work. So I
turned it back on. And after a half hour it freezed
again. Then I restarted into windows :P. Probably i
got frustrated :D.
If it wasn't for this problem .. I would remove
windows instantly. That's how much I like Ubuntu.

Oh, this happened both in Beryl and "normal" Ubuntu ..
it's called Compiz? Or Compiz is something else? I'm
new to linux but i;m a programmer and I learn fast :).

Anyway if you need me to test something I will gladly
do it just let me know ..

Keep up the good work .. it's worth it :)
Horatiu

Hi to all, I've the some problem.
Sometimes I launch totem (not always, sometimes randomly) the system freezes!!
I'm sure this bug depends exclusively on totem because only when I launch this program the system freezes.
I attached my syslog. I red syslog.0 but this problem isn't there.(last information on syslog.0 end the day before).
When system freezes I can only press the fisical off button to off my notebook!
Nothing else I can do! I can't logout, close X, open a terminal,...nothing. keyboard off, this last time mouse was on (the other times I don't remember) but I was unable to click!
My info:
Ubuntu 8.04 64bit
Notebook acer travelmate 4230

What can I do?

newuser: your bug looks like a different bug report than Horatiu's. It'd be helpful if you were to submit a new bug report about the package gvfs-fuse and included the log file you've included here. Thanks in advance.

I have had the same/similar problem with my system and it turned out that it had something to do with the swap-cache. I could solve it by setting the value "vm.swapiness" in my /etc/sysctl.conf to "0". But I'm still waiting for a real fix. greetings

@Brian: of course, I can do that! But seems I've same Horatiu's bug. Moreover I just had same problem with vlc too. I start up ubuntu, I launched only vlc and system freezed (I was able just to move the cursor with mouse but mouse buttons and keyb was off!). I had to off my notebook pressing the off physical button! Like totem!

I add my new syslog (not syslog.0 because last line of this file end before this problem!)
What do you think about the problem? What is the cause?
What is gvfs-fuse? Why you told me about this package?
Thank you
:)

@newuser:

I had the same problem as yourself and others with seemingly random freezes and definite lockups when launching totem or vlc. Correct me if i am wrong, but if this occurs 99% of the time when trying to playback video i think this may be more related to bug:233896

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/233896

I came across a thread that suggested it might be helpful to set gstreamer to use a different x output and this seems to have solved the problem for me with 6+ days of uptime so far and not a single freeze.

the url i found is as follows:

http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-492411.html

with the helpful post made by alex_anthony. I know that thread seems related to compiz however it seemed to solve the problem for me (i could not pretend to understand how, if anyone could enlighten please do) so i thought I'd post.

My apologies if this is not the correct place for such a post however i felt it could help someone who coming to this generic titled thread and maybe recognizing that the problem can be more specifically defined, as it did help me (this was the first one i came across as well.)

thanks
