Bug Description

Hello, warning : i'm french :)

I'm not able to update my system without synaptic.

Explanation : the update-notifier do not automatically reload the packages
informations. So until i update my database with synaptic, the update-notifier
do nothing (no icons). It is useless ! As the icon isn't shown, i can't update
my database with the update-notifier (via the context-menu)

also, i notice that i disable de re-authantification with sudo (NOPASSWD: ALL).
IMHO, this is very bad to re-enter the password and, as sudo remember the code,
it is very useless. As you wish.

If this is a lake of functionnality rather than a simple bug, i suggest to use
different icons for the notifier :
 * up to date. (but the menu is available.
 * update available.
OR automatically update de db with the notifier. But beware of flood on the
network !

Thanks.

Thanks for your bugreport.

Update-notifer in itself does not reload the package database. It installs a
cron-job that does that nightly (actually it just set a apt configuration so
that apt does the updating nightly). The intervall can be configured via the
preferences menu in update-notifier. We don't want to display a icon if the
system is up-to-date.

I hope that answers your questions :) Feel free to reopen the bug if you are not
happy with this reasoning.
