Bug Description

Using the latest 3.13-rc7 on two of my AMD machines, both of which have Radeon HD 6850 graphics cards in them, the system crashes when playing videos. I think it may be easier to cause the crash when playing a video that is 720p+. It also is not limited to crashing when playing videos, but can also crash simply from browsing the web or doing anything that causes a demand on the GPU. It may or may not be related to DPM implemented in the latest kernels. Using kernel 3.12 from Trusty repos with DPM enabled, it works fine. I have a machine with a Radeon HD 7950 but I have not tested it yet. Similarly, I have used an AMD Richland APU which crashes with kernel 3.13 immediately on the login screen. Put simply, there needs to be a lot of testing of AMD chips before releasing kernel 3.13 for Trusty stable.

WORKAROUND: I found that if I disable DPM by editing /etc/default/grub and adding radeon.dpm=0 to CMDLINE_LINUX that the crashing stops.

Can you test the 3.12.6 kernel and the 3.13-rc1 to 3.13-rc6 kernels and see if you can find where it broke?

This issue appears to be an upstream bug, since you tested the latest upstream kernel. Would it be possible for you to open an upstream bug report[0]? That will allow the upstream Developers to examine the issue, and may provide a quicker resolution to the bug.

Please follow the instructions on the wiki page[0]. The first step is to email the appropriate mailing list. If no response is received, then a bug may be opened on bugzilla.kernel.org.

Once this bug is reported upstream, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-reported-upstream'.

I haven't tried any upstream kernels since I just automatically update to the latest kernel in the Ubuntu Mainline PPA with a script. All 3.13 rc kernels and even the new 3.13-generic which is now in Trusty stable repos have the crashing issues with my two Radeon HD 6800 machines. I found that if I disable DPM by editing /etc/default/grub and adding radeon.dpm=0 to CMDLINE_LINUX that the crashing stops, so it is definitely related to issues with AMD's Dynamic Power Management feature in kernel 3.13. Something broke between kernel 3.12 and 3.13 in regards to DPM but I wouldn't know what.

Thanks for the info that all 3.13-rc kernels are affected. Are you able to try the 3.12.6 kernel? If the 3.12.6 kernel works, are you able to bisect? See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/KernelBisection

Well, 3.12.7 and 3.12.6 work fine with DPM on Radeon HD 6800s. Only kernel 3.13s are broken with DPM on Radeon HD 6800s. My Radeon HD 7950 works fine with DPM on kernel 3.13. I've never bisected anything before and don't have the time to do it at the moment.

Re comment #8 - that's probably due to this patch, which has also been sent to the stable kernel maintainers - https://git.kernel.org/cgit/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/commit/?id=919cf555c04e16dafb1fba56904eb23889a812c3
