Bug Description

Hi,

After a dist-upgrade from Feisty to Gutsy, my DVD-RW doesn't work any more.

Currently, after launching an xorg session (GNOME, XFCE or Fluxbox), my DVD-RW drive doesn't answer any more. I cannot eject it, I cannot read or burn a DVD, etc.

I've this error in /var/log/messages file:

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Unfortunately we can't fix it, because your description doesn't yet have enough information.
Please include as attachments the following additional information, if you have not already done so (please pay attention to lspci's additional options), as required by the Ubuntu Kernel Team:
1. Please include the output of the command 'uname -a' in your next response. It should be one, long line of text which includes the exact kernel version you're running, as well as the CPU architecture.
2. Please run the command 'dmesg > dmesg.log' and attach the resulting file 'dmesg.log' to this bug report.
3. Please run the command 'sudo lspci -vvnn > lspci-vvnn.log' and attach the resulting file 'lspci-vvnn.log' to this bug report.
For your reference, the full description of procedures for kernel-related bug reports is available at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies . Thanks in advance!

Hi Brian !

Thanks for your response ^_^ sorry for the missing files, it's my first kernel bug report !

The command "uname -a" returns :
    Linux myhost 2.6.22-8-generic #1 SMP Thu Jul 12 15:59:45 GMT 2007 i686 GNU/Linux

dmesg.log and lspci-vvnn.log is attached to this comment.

I have the same problem. After trying to write a DVD with k3b, I could see the same messages as Achraf in /var/log/messages (except that my DVD+-RW is hdd, not hdc). After that, no DVD - written or blank - is recognized in the unit. So I can't read any DVD, nor I can burn another blank.

It's annoying, as I already started to think to switch Ubuntu to some other distro.

Below is my 'uname -a' output:
Linux acasa-desktop 2.6.20-16-386 #2 Sun Sep 23 19:47:10 UTC 2007 i686 GNU/Linux

Attached are dmesg.log and lspci-vvnn.log. Since the problem happened yesterday, the dmesg.log may not be relevant.

Had a very similar problem on a fresh Gutsy ( 2.6.22-14-generic ) install.
DVD burning did not work at all (brasero, gnomebaker)
Finally updated firmware on my GSA-4167B to Dangerous Brothers DL13. Works like a charm.
I suggest you check for new firmwares.

Hi,

for me the problem was solved by compiling my kernel with "CONFIG_PATA_JMICRON=m"

Now the DVD-RW-Device is no longer detected as /dev/hdb, it is detected as /dev/scd0 correctly.

My board is a GA-965G-DS3.

Best regards.

Hi Matthias,

Thanks for the update. However it seems odd that you'd need to recompile your kernel to enable CONFIG_PATA_JMICRON=m as it appears it was enabled by default.

Also, for anyone else interested, the Hardy Heron Alpha series was recently released. Alpha2 and subsequent releases contain an updated version of the kernel. You can download and try the new Hardy Heron Alpha release from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/hardy/ . Please note that Alpha3 will be released within the next day or two so you may want to wait. You should be able to then test the new kernel via the LiveCD. If you can, please verify if this bug still exists or not and report back your results. General information regarding the release can also be found here: http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/ .

All,

The plot thickens. I too encountered the above mentioned failures after a hard drive failure forced me to update to 7.10. The irony is that I installed Gutsy from a CDROM burned on the exact hardware/firmware that now can only brick DVD/CDROM media.

After tweaking many items, each of which left me with a DVD with block read errors (unreadable/bricked), I decided to try out NeroLinux 3.0.0.0. Nero had no problems burning a DVD and there were none of the status=0x58 or 05 6F/03 errors previously reported when using k3b and associated utilities. In addition, I verified the contents of the disc were readable by randomly selecting files to read/test.

This leads me to believe that one of the utilities, such as cdrdao, dvd+rw-format, etc. are incompatible with how the kernel now expects to receive commands for burning CDs and DVDs (http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=247459).

I've attached the command output requested above for your reference. I can provide a fresh-boot dmesg if requested.

Leann,

Thanks for your update. I'm glad that a newer version of the Hary release candidate will be available soon. However, I have a means to burn DVD's currently and do not want to test out the Hary release without consideration for its potential impact on my now-working DVD burning system.

Prio to me upgrading or otherwise testing Hary, can you provide me with release notes or other information that describes changes in the Hary kernel and how they change the issue with Fiesty burning DVD's via k3b? I've already had to upgrade my system and purchase NeroLinux to get to a working state from 6.10. I don't want to upgrade/reinstall/relicense NeroLinux to arrive at this point again.

I appreciate your support, thanks again!

I now realize me asking you to test via the LiveCD doesn't make any sense :) Would you have spare room and an extra partition to test installing? I can give you instructions on how to manually install the Hardy kernel on your Gutsy installation but I'd almost prefer you not messing with your existing working setup. Hope that helps. Thanks.

Leann,

Thanks for your follow up: I appreciate the links and your candor.
Compliments to your support for this issue! Off the record, I have
supported Linux, via tech support and, currently, engineering support
for a hardware vendor off and on since 1999.

Installing Gutsy was a very pleasant surprise over previous versions,
not to mention other Linux distributions: most everything that I have
had problems with previously has been handled with aplomb with Gutsy.
Very impressive, keep up the good work. I find myself with almost
nothing but compliments and recommendations for this distribution.

Still there are pointy edges to put out a newbie's eye (or at least make
them blink a lot), which is why I decided to update the listed bug.
Easy CDROM/DVD burning is high on the list of things that should not be
a problem out of the box.

In any case, if you can provide any specific reference to fixes in the
kernel or elsewhere I will be happy to test out the new kernel or
packages. Otherwise I'll review the changes and may do a dpgk -i on the
Hardy kernel to see what happens.

Suggestions welcome and thanks again,

James

I can confirm this defect in Gutsy - I am having exactly the same issue. I have noted that it only occurs if I boot the system with a disc in the drive. If I reboot, remove the disc and boot up again, the issue is resolved and I can start using the drive again.

man hdparm:
-w Perform a device reset (DANGEROUS). Do NOT use this option.
It exists for unlikely situations where a reboot might otherwise be
required to get a confused drive back into a useable state.

Is it really save?

I confirm this bug: when its empty, accidentally my DVD-ROM is going mad, and there are messages in dmesg:
Jul 21 00:41:09 ivan kernel: [13682.534352] hda: status error: status=0x58 { DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest }
Jul 21 00:41:09 ivan kernel: [13682.534362] ide: failed opcode was: unknown
And after hundreds of that messages I can not use DVD-ROM. DVD-ROM locks. When it has CD or DVD inside - that errors do not appear.

I reconfirm this bug in Kubuntu Gutsy kernel version 2.6.22-15 and add an additional data point:

If I boot without the kernel option irqpoll, these error messages don't appear in the kernel log. However, after a while, the CDROM drive stops responding anyway, and the USB system dies for some reason.

So I have to boot with the kernel option irqpoll, which causes these messages to appear. If I execute sudo hdparm -w -d 0 /dev/hda, then these messages temporarily stop and I can use the CDROM drive for a brief period of time.
