Bug Description

Binary package hint: desktop-effects, gnome-control-center

"Desktop effects" tab in System -> Parameters -> Appearance

If you use restricted fglrx ATI driver, it displays message "Composite extensions not available". It's absolutely unclear where the problem is, and why this setting is not working. As well, when you click "ok" in the error message box - nothing happens. Only way to close in is to press [X] in the corner.

Yes, we know, fglrx is not supported by composite extensions. It would be good to see message saying something like "Desktop effects not supported with proprietary ATI driver".

Proprietary ATI driver is not the only possible cause. A message like "Sorry, Desktop effects is not supported by your material and/or your configuration." Perhaps with a litel script to see where is the mistake (more common).

I have the same problem with ATI card and fglrx driver. The acceleration works but Desktop effects -> Appearance display the message "Composite extensions not available". The gutsy is RC and the kernel is 2.6.22-14-generic.

Still in Hardy beta.

Also the window with the information has a ok button which does not work. You have to use the "X" button to close it.

However after the window is closed it looks in the main window that you have been able to choose normal or extra settings even if you have not..

Happends on amd64 with the nvidia driver. I believe this is a bug in the gnome-control-center-package, not desktop-effects.

This bug is around lines 855-867 and 1016, in the appearance-effects.c file in the gnome-control-center package. I'll see if i can piece together a patch, but this is likely to be a very easy fix for a developer.

one line fix. Worked on my test environment. Looks like the original developer forgot to put in gtk_widget_destroy (dialog);
