Bug Description

Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.22-10-generic

After upgrading from tribe 4 to 5 my system freezes up about 1 minute after the log-on screen. Wetter or not I log in.
The previous Kernel 2.6.22.9 still boots the machine fine.

I would give dmesg info. But the system is completely frozen up.
It's a Medion 8083.

I kept getting this in kmsg, so I blacklisted prism54 in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist

The Hardy Heron Alpha series was recently released which contains an updated version of the kernel. You can download and try the new Hardy Heron Alpha release from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/hardy/ . You should be able to then test the new kernel via the LiveCD. If you can, please verify if this bug still exists or not and report back your results. General information regarding the release can also be found here: http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/ .

Also, we will keep this report open against the actively developed kernel bug against 2.6.22 this will be closed. Thanks.

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

Hi Roconda,

Is there any sort of kernel oops or panic that you see? Does blacklisting the prism54 modlule as mentioned above still prevent the system from freezing? It might also be helpful if you'd attach your dmesg output when running Intrepid. Thanks.

Dear Leann,

No, I don't see any kernel 'oops or panic' at all. prism54 Was already blacklisted. I blacklisted ipv6 manually too, some said it would prevent freezes. It didn't but my syslog got lots of spam for modprobing ipv6. I replaced intrepid for opensuse 11, would a livecd dmesg be anough for you too ? The dmesg for hardy is no problem at all if you need it too.

Cheers!

Hi Roconda,

Being able to capture and attach any relevant log information regarding the freeze when running Intrepid would be the most helpful. Particularly any error message would be of interest. Thanks.

Per a decision made by the Ubuntu Kernel Team, bugs will longer be assigned to the ubuntu-kernel-team in Launchpad as part of the bug triage process. The ubuntu-kernel-team is being unassigned from this bug report. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies for more information. Thanks.

Hi Fatah,

Thanks for testing and the feedback. I'd like to try to keep this bug as up to date as possible. If you'd be willing, could you confirm this is still an issue with the latest Karmic 9.10 Alpha release http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/karmic/ . It contains a 2.6.31 based kernel. Thanks.

Hi,
I should add, that the isl3890-support does not work out of the box with the Karmic 9.10 release. While it worked flawlessly with 9.04 (already when booting the live-CD), you have to manually change the firmware files in /lib/firmware.
I'm using a isl3890-based cardbus-card in an old IBM Thinkpad.
