Bug Description

There is no sound after installing clean 7.04 on a Fujitsu La 1703 laptop. It has VIA HD Audio Codec VT8237A sound card.
I'm a linux noob but i tried this:

aplay --list-devices

**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: VT82xx [HDA VIA VT82xx], device 0: VT1708 Analog [VT1708 Analog]
Subdevices: 1/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: VT82xx [HDA VIA VT82xx], device 6: Si3054 Modem [Si3054 Modem]
Subdevices: 1/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

Maybe Ubuntu thinks that the modem is also a sound card?
(The video card isn't supported either on this laptop: VN896 VIA Chrome9 HC. I think Ubuntu developers should concentrate on laptops sold without windows.)

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. This bug does not meet the criteria for a stable release update and is being marked as Won't Fix for the kernel version the bug was submitted about. You can learn more about the stable release update process at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates .
However, the issue that you reported is one that should be possible to test with the live environment of the Desktop CD of the development release - Gutsy Gibbon. It would help us greatly if you could test with it so we can work on getting it fixed in the actively developed kernel. You can find out more about the development release at http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/ .
If you do decide to test with the development release of Ubuntu please comment on this bug report and include at least the minimal information requested at http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingSoundProblems . Thanks again and we appreciate your help.

With gutsy, i can hear sounds with a headphone but it's very quiet. When i use the speaker, there is no sound at all.

After installing the latest OSS driver i have sound from both the speaker and the headphone, but if I plug in a headphone it doesn't mute the speaker. The other problem is that my logitech USB speakers stopped working. I couldn't switch between the inner speaker and the USB speakers anymore. Uninstalling the OSS driver put me back to the original state.

installing the latest OSS driver?
I am just a bug triager, but that seems a bit hard, had to compile it?

The Hardy Heron Alpha series was recently released. Alpha2 and subsequent releases contain an updated version of the kernel. You can download and try the new Hardy Heron Alpha release from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/hardy/ . Please note that Alpha3 will be released within the next day or two so you many want to wait. You should be able to then test the new kernel via the LiveCD. If you can, please verify if this bug still exists or not and report back your results. General information regarding the release can also be found here: http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/ . Thanks!

I didn't have to compile it, the deb package is available to download from http://www.opensound.com/oss.html .
I will try it the sound with the next Alpha release.

Unfortunately there is no change in Hardy Alpha 3. No sound from the speaker, only a very low volume sound from the headphone.

Then adding bug on linux package (Hardy kernel) and confirming.
Thanks a lot for this new information.

As far as I know, drivers from http://www.opensound.com/oss.html are not expected to go in a future version of the kernel.
They were close source for the last 10 years, and only recently been re-released open-source.
Since then, ALSA have replaced OSS (having OSS emulation from ALSA) inside the kernel.

Does this mean the sound will work in Hardy? I don't know what 1708B and 1709 are but I will test the next version.

It means that it should be fixed by the hardy release.

Developers: according to http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=659996, bug have appear on 2.20.16 and was not in 2.20.15.
I know, it won't be fixed if Feisty.

Krychek, I think 1708 refer to the chip that deals with sound on your motherboard, after all your bug report had in it:
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: VT82xx [HDA VIA VT82xx], device 0: VT1708 Analog [VT1708 Analog]

hg is the symbol of Mercure and the command use for the Mercurial control version system used by alsa developers to share their patchs.
alsa-kernel hg can be browsed at:
http://hg-mirror.alsa-project.org/alsa-kernel/

So I think that the strange sentence was willing to say that new patches have been added to fix problems with your chip in the previously mentioned link.
While making the sentence, Daniel marked the bug as Fix committed, probably because he think that these patches will fix your problem.
Since it did not marked it as fix committed should means that this is not yet available even in Hardy (here I am saying the opposite of William).
Maybe William knows stuff I don't.

I just installed the new alsa driver 1.0.16 RC2 and the sound works! \o/
If Hardy will have the new version then it's gonna be OK.

There is a problem though: my laptop has only one speaker, it's on the left side. If I mute the left channel and max out the right one there's only noise. If you're using headphones it's terrible cuz you hear only noise from the right side..

Maybe this should be reported as another bug?

Make sure you have all your sound controls unmuted and volumes turned up. ALSA 1.0.16 mutes controls by default so you have to unmute them to hear sound. Thanks.

I'm sorry. Sound was muted. It works perfectly when I turn up the volume. Only the jack sensing isn't ok but i think it's not so important. And I haven't tested the microphone yet..
