Bug Description
Binary package hint: linux-source-2.6.22
Using the 20070921.1 desktop i386 CD with Acer Travelmate C104TCi (BIOS R01AK).
Note: To boot from the IEEE1394 (Firewire) DVD-ROM/CD-RW external drive it seems there is a *trick* to getting the BIOS to recognise the drive at boot-time.
First, enter BIOS (press F2) and in "Startup Configuration" ensure "1394 Legacy Mode" is enabled. In the list of bootable devices there should be "1394 Optical Device". If not:
1. Unplug the drive.
2. Restart the PC and plug the drive in just after the PC powers-up, and then re-enter BIOS setup with F2.
Now ensure the device is ahead of the "hard drive" in the boot order or when the PC is starting press F12 to bring up the boot-device menu and choose there.
Summary of problems encountered:
1. Whilst starting the video is blank instead of showing splash
2. After Gnome starts there is no gnome-main-menu panel - just desktop with "Examples" and "Install".
3. No reaction when double-clicking "Examples". Right-click brings up the desktop context menu correctly.
4. Cannot switch to virtual terminals with Ctrl+Alt+F1 - F6
5. Restarting GDM works with Ctrl+Alt+Backspace
6. After restarting GDM, gnome reports "Nautilis can't be used now, due to an unexpected error" with the details:
"Nautilus can't be used now, due to an unexpected error from Bonobo when attempting to locate the factory. Killing bonobo-
This may or may not be a symptom of bug #138915 "unionfs NULL pointer dereference in 2.6.22-11.32"
Safe Graphics mode is worse - the video appears to switch to graphics mode (vesafb?) but there's no text output (missing fbcon?) and Gnome never appears, the screen remains blank with backlight lit.
The Alternate CD starts okay but I haven't allowed it to install yet until I'm sure the existing Windows file-system and partition can be safely resized from there.
I shall test with Safe Graphics mode, and also the Alternate CD later.
The Hardy Heron Alpha series is currently under development and contains an updated version of the kernel. You can download and try the new Hardy Heron Alpha release from http:// cdimage. ubuntu. com/releases/ hardy/ . You should be able to test the new kernel using the LiveCD. If you can, please verify if this bug still exists or not and report back your results. General information regarding the release can also be found here: http:// www.ubuntu. com/testing/ . Thanks.
