Bug Description

Binary package hint: linux-source-2.6.22

I was asked to file a separate bug report as I have different hardware from bug 148080:

The nc8430 laptop never suspends/hibernates properly.
This is both when closing the lid or choosing to hibernate from the menu.
My laptop has the Mobility X1600 Radeon and 1680x1050 display.

The cursor is left blinking to the top left corner of the screen and then - nothing.
A hard reboot is required to get the laptop back to "life".

As people tend to need laptops for easy mobility, this is really annoying a problem. Hopefully this is fixed before release.

Here is the dmesg file after running the following command (and hard reboot, since suspend nor resume does not work)

sync; echo 1 > /sys/power/pm_trace; /etc/acpi/sleep.sh force

There is no pm_trace file in /sys/power, however.

Additionally, before the blank black screen comes up, it seems that some logon-kind of a window flashes on the screen. It happens very fast - for a fraction of a second. That's why I have not noticed it before. It is impossible to capture/comprehend, it happens so fast.

Tried to disable the fgrlx driver through restricted-manager but cannot do that since it also crashes.
Bug-reporting crashes as well when trying to report the restricted-manager crash.

Tried to see if I could get this lappy to hibernate/suspend with the open-source driver. But can't change to those since it won't let me.

s2disk is also not available through synaptic.
So, I would prefer not to use it since it is not "standard" software tested with Ubuntu.
May test it one of these days, though!

Moved to Hardy Alpha 6, hibernation and suspend still fail.

On hardy beta suspend works, but hibernation does not resume properly. The laptop starts through the "normal" grub starting procedure and ends up in a very strange state when programs do not open properly. They try, but nothing appears on the screen. Further, the shutdown dialogue does not appear at all, shutting down means first shutting down X, then pressing the power button briefly, (shutdown procedures begin), then after everything halts, press power off manually.

After this kind of a restart the computer behaves normally again.

Launchpad Janitor (janitor) wrote : This bug is now reported against the 'linux' package

Beginning with the Hardy Heron 8.04 development cycle, all open Ubuntu kernel bugs need to be reported against the "linux" kernel package. We are automatically migrating this bug to the new "linux" package. However, development has already began for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. It would be helpful if you could test the upcoming release and verify if this is still an issue - http://www.ubuntu.com/testing . If the issue still exists, please update this report by changing the Status of the "linux" task from "Incomplete" to "New". We appreciate your patience and understanding as we make this transition. Thanks!

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

Juksu, since you are the original bug reporter, care to confirm if this is resolved for you with Intrepid's final release. Thanks.

Launchpad Janitor (janitor) wrote : Kernel team bugs

Per a decision made by the Ubuntu Kernel Team, bugs will longer be assigned to the ubuntu-kernel-team in Launchpad as part of the bug triage process. The ubuntu-kernel-team is being unassigned from this bug report. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies for more information. Thanks.
