Tracker doesn't search for phrases in enclosed quotes

I see that the importance of this bug is Undecided. Let me tell you something, if I was a Windows user contemplating switching to Linux and would come up against this bug
it would be a deal breaker for me. Searching for exact phrase is a basic function of all search tools.
BTW I replaced this buggy search tool with Google desktop search.

I spoke too soon, Google desktop search doesn't have the ability to search for exact phrase, but Windows search has it so my argument is still valid.

I dont have permission to set importance in launchpad but as the maintainer of tracker I can tell you we are working on this and it is of some importance

On a more positive note, searching for exact phrases will be an awesome feature to have -- very useful. So thank you for considering it important and for working on it :-)

Another reason to consider this important is that Beagle, which used to be Ubuntu's standard desktop search tool, has this feature. When Ubuntu switched from Beagle to Tracker, we lost the ability to search for phrases. Thus for Ubuntu, this is a regression.

I appreciate very much that Jamie McCracken is working on it.

This is a huge problem for me.

I assumed that searching for "Protocol Header" would indeed only look for protocol-space-header, but all I get are references to only the first search term.

Are there any workarounds ? I tried stuff like "Protocol AND header", but it returned much the same results.

Uninstalling Tracker and installing Beagle solves the problem.

I tried Beagle, but it has it's own set of problems.

I need to search inside PDFs mainly, so for the moment I can use Adobe Reader for that. I'd rather not though.

I suggest that if this bug isn't fixed in time for inclusion in Jaunty, Tracker should be dropped from Ubuntu and replaced with Beagle, which works fine and doesn't have this bug.

So this bug was opened in 2007 and it's now 2010. Can someone from the Tracker team comment on if this is a planned feature or not, and if so when it's expected? If it's not planned or just not technically practical due to Tracker's architecture - lets get that out into the open so we all understand where things lie.

I tried tracker after upgrade to Ubuntu 11.10:

It does not work at all (can't find any search term).

Installed recoll and it works great. I'd recommend it to everyone. And yes, it can search for phrases in enclosed quotes.

@rpr nospam: "it does not work at all" doesn't help anyone, if it doesn't work for you, try to explain your issues in a bugreport, ideally in gnome bugzilla:

@Matthew: Tracker should be able to look for sentences enclosed within brackets, see the "Sentences" section in:
 http://live.gnome.org/Tracker/Documentation/Examples/SPARQL/FTS
Also, please make sure you're using a recent Tracker version (we're targeting 0.12.x stable series).
