Bug Description

Hi,

It seems an update between the 4th and 5th of October has resulted in my soundcard no longer being detected (snd-intel-hda).
The following message has started popping up in dmesg;

[ 38.482508] PCI: Setting latency timer of device 0000:00:1b.0 to 64
[ 39.008813] ACPI: PCI interrupt for device 0000:00:1b.0 disabled
[ 39.008823] HDA Intel: probe of 0000:00:1b.0 failed with error -16

I'm running Gutsy on a Vostro 1400 (==Inspiron 1420), as you are probably aware of there is a known issue with the sound on these machines, therefore i've been using the ALSA 1.0.15rc3 drivers and lib. This has been running great for several weeks until i did my daily update of Ubuntu (i naturally recompiled and reinstalled the 1.0.15rc3 drivers/libs/utils after the update and restored the alsa-base file)

Don't worry about it if i'm the only one experiencing this issue - just regard this as a heads-up.

Thanks & keep up the great work!

Hi. This is highly related to #131133. For me, last update did not solve the #131133 problem. Currently boot process is very slow, because of :

[ 23.498634] hda_intel: azx_get_response timeout, switching to polling mode...
[ 24.502109] hda_intel: azx_get_response timeout, switching to single_cmd mode...
[ 28.059489] hda_codec: No auto-config is available, default to model=ref [this takes ages...]
[ 35.185861] hda-intel: no codecs initialized
[ 35.186913] ACPI: PCI interrupt for device 0000:00:1b.0 disabled

After the boot, Alsa reports "no soundcard found".

Same here. Before tribe 5 I had that really low volume problem (can't find the bug #) and it was solved after that update, but now, after the last big upgrade my HDA-NVIDIA ( = HDA-Intel) is not even detected. I'm on a desktop with an ASUS P5N SLI Motherboard, nforce 570.

Launchpad Janitor (janitor) wrote : This bug is now reported against the 'linux' package

Beginning with the Hardy Heron 8.04 development cycle, all open Ubuntu kernel bugs need to be reported against the "linux" kernel package. We are automatically migrating this bug to the new "linux" package. However, development has already began for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. It would be helpful if you could test the upcoming release and verify if this is still an issue - http://www.ubuntu.com/testing . If the issue still exists, please update this report by changing the Status of the "linux" task from "Incomplete" to "New". We appreciate your patience and understanding as we make this transition. Thanks!

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

Per a decision made by the Ubuntu Kernel Team, bugs will longer be assigned to the ubuntu-kernel-team in Launchpad as part of the bug triage process. The ubuntu-kernel-team is being unassigned from this bug report. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies for more information. Thanks.

this issue also exists in intrepid with kernel 2.6.27-9-generic and it is driving me crazy.

after i first installed my system everything was fine, i had sound out of the box for a few weeks. then somewhere down the road it broke. i cannot say what upgrade broke it, but upgrading to intrepid did not fix it.

i tried alsa-driver-1.0.18a from source and also vanilla 2.6.27 -- no success.

the mainboard is an intel essential DG33TL, acc. to specs:
- Intel 82801IR (ICH9R)
- IDT STAC9271D audio codec

lshw confirms:
        *-multimedia UNCLAIMED
             description: Audio device
product: 82801I (ICH9 Family) HD Audio Controller
             vendor: Intel Corporation
             physical id: 1b
             bus info: pci@0000:00:1b.0
             version: 02
             width: 64 bits
             clock: 33MHz
             capabilities: pm msi pciexpress cap_list
             configuration: latency=0

i tried all models acc. to ALSA-Configuration.txt:
        STAC9227/9228/9229/927x
          ref Reference board
          3stack D965 3stack
          5stack D965 5stack + SPDIF
          dell-3stack Dell Dimension E520
dell-bios Fixes with Dell BIOS setup

also probe_mask=1 or 8 did not help

pci=noacpi also did not work!

here's some dmesg:
[ 14.381094] HDA Intel 0000:00:1b.0: found PCI INT A -> IRQ 10
[ 14.381213] HDA Intel 0000:00:1b.0: setting latency timer to 64
[ 15.808314] hda_intel: azx_get_response timeout, switching to polling mode: last cmd=0x100f0000
[ 16.812012] hda_intel: azx_get_response timeout, switching to single_cmd mode: last cmd=0x100f0000
[ 16.812034] hda-intel: no codecs initialized

what to do?

Hi fdemmer,

Care to actually open a new report as it appears you were affected by a different update than the original bug reporter. The issue you are experiencing will likely require a different fix so it's best it has it's own report. Feel free to look at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies for more information. Also, in your new report if you could include the following alsa-info.txt file that would be great. To generate the alsa-info.txt file do the following:

Please download and run http://alsa-project.org/alsa-info.sh with the --no-upload option:

./alsa-info.sh --no-upload

Then attach the resulting alsa-info.txt file to your new bug report. Thanks.
